PHYS-1315-001 Concepts of Physical Science I
Fundamental concepts of the physical world. The philosophy of science, the physical universe, Newton’s laws, energy, heat, electricity and magnetism. The structure of water, chemical principles, theory of molecular structure and organic and inorganic chemistry will be studied.

Course Objectives:
The objectives of this course are:
1. To provide resource materials for Texas panhandle teachers primarily in the congtent area of biology and related areas.
2. To help in-sevice teachers develop a high level of confidents when teaching science classes.
3. To increase the knowledge base in biology and related areas for in-service teachers of the Texas panhandle.
The student perfomance objectives of this course are:
1. To have confidence in presenting science content, particularly biology, to classes.
2. To be able to discuss biological reactions, basic genetics and characteristics, and matter and energy related to biological systems.
3. To be able to use a variety of resources to enhance content knowledge base.
4. To recognize and correct misconceptions in biology and related science content areas.

Attendance is strongly encouraged for all classes. It is important to attend class regularly as missed classes means missed content material. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed notes and hand out materials if s/he is not in class. It has been shown that regular attendance in a class equates to better understanding and gain of knowledge. There is no point deduction for missing class. However, points may be lost for materials not obtained after missing class. There will be opportunities for make-up work for missed classes.

NOTE: The topics that may be covered could include, but not be limited to, genetics, matter and energy in biological systems, characteristics, and related biological and environmental topics
This class is offered in collaboration with Region 16 Education Service Center through a grant from TEA and the Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Mathematics and Science education. The participants are public school teachers from the area served by Region 16 and may include teachers of elementary, middle school, and high school. The topics chosen will vary each term that this class is taught and will be based on the need and interest of the participants. If the class is primarily elementary teachers the content and method of delivery will be different than if the course is mostly high school teachers. The content will vary from class to class - this year is chemistry. The class could focus on geology and atmospheric science, physics, astronomy or biology. It is always science centered and considers the interdisciplinary nature of science.
