\ After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty of the department/program.

  3. \ Calculate frequencies and wavelengths used in fiber optics.

  5. \ Describe the performance characteristics of optical fibers.

  7. \ Describe the physical characteristics of optical fibers.

  9. \ Describe the physical characteristics of fiber connectors, breakout kits, and other terminal equipment.

  11. \ Select optical transmitters and receivers to match characteristics of specific optical fibers.

  13. \ Plan a fiber optic installation using the power budget diagram.

  15. \ Demonstrate the use of an OTDR in troubleshooting and proof of performance of fiber optic systems.

  17. \ Terminate an optical fiber with an appropriate connector To achieve satisfactory performance requirements.

\ COURSE DESCRIPTION (as in catalog): Introductory course in fiber optice and its application including advantages of fiber, light transmission in fiber, types of fiber, sources, detectors, and connectors.

\ OBJECTIVES AND GOALS OF COURSE: The student will connect fiber optics cables and fiber by mechanical and fusion methods, make measurements to determine the condition of a fiber optic system, loss, numerical aperture (NA), bandwidth (BW), and dispersion, build and characterize fiber optic (FO) transmitters and receivers, and determine the need given application for the fiber system to be used.

\ It is the policy of the Sciences and Engineering Division and the Electronics Technology Department that food and drink may be allowed in the classroom setting, at the discretion of the instructor, but food and drink are not allowed in labs.

\ It is the policy of the Sciences and Engineering Division and the Electronics Technology Department that pagers and cell phones must be turned off or in silent mode in the classroom setting and pagers and cell phones must be turned off while in labs.

\ The time and place for make-up test will be determined by the instructor

Attendance

\  Please remember the deadline for dropping a class at AC is published in the official Amarillo College Schedule of Classes. If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an “F” for the course.

\ Attendance in class is regarded as requirement, and obligation for learning. Students will be warned and after two (2) absences and counseled by the instructor after three (3) absences. 
\
\ Four (4) absences in any one semester may be cause for students to receive a failing grade for the course. 
\
\ Being tardy three (3) times will be considered one (1) absence. 
\
\ It is the responsibility of the student to make up any work missed due to absences and to gain missed lecture notes through outside reading and/or note from classmates. 
\
\ Make up examinations (and other assignments) will be   permitted at the discretion of the instructor. The time and place for make-up test will be determined by the instructor. 
\
\ If you are going to be late or absent, please notify the instructor as soon as possible.
