Course Description

Emphasis placed on capitalization, punctuation and identification of the parts of speech. Grammar usage will be practiced through writing and proofreading.

Student Performance

\ Course Objectives:  To increase students’ ability to communicate clearly through the written and spoken word.  To develop grammar skills beyond basic sentence structure.  To further develop students’ ability to write and communicate orally using correct grammar and details.

\ Student Pervormance Objectives: 1. Expand knowledge of noun and pronoun usage. 2. Expand knowledge of adjective and adverb usage. 3. Introduce adverbs. 4. Identify comparisons and possessives. 5. Expand sentences using adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. 6. Learn to combine and expand simple sentences using conjunctions. 7. Expand knowledge of simple punctuation 8. Learn to proofread and correct basic grammatical errors.  9. Introduce imperative and exclamatory sentences.

Expected Student Behavior

Please speak English in the classroom at all times. Cell phones must be turned off during class times unless special permission is given by the instructor.

Grading Criteria

\ A = 90-100 Excellent; B = 80-89 Good; C = 70-79 Fair; D = Below 70 ; Failing, must repeat. One hour of lab work per week is required.

\ Makeup Policy:
\ Make up tests will not be given. The lowest test grade will be dropped. If you miss one test, that grade will be dropped and your other tests will be averaged with no penalty. If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for each additional test missed.
\
\ Dropping to Avoid a Failing Final Grade:
\ If a student does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will need to drop the course by the last day to withdraw to receive a grade of W.  A grade of W does not lower your grade point avarage. However, students who drop or fail a class must repeat and pay for the same class again to earn credit for the class.  Dropping or failing a class could also cause problems with financial aid.

Attendance

\ Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5
\ hours a semester. Additional absences will affect your final grade in the class. If you stop
\ attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.
