\ Through reading the current literature, researching recent communication findings, and participating in group and individual oral assignments, the student will:

\

\ 1.      Define and explain basic communication terms and principles which undergird competent communication in personal, social, and professional settings.

\

\ 2.      Analyze various communication contexts.

\

\ 3.      Understand the process of perception and the part perception plays in communicating with others.

\

\ 4.      Improve listening skills.

\

\ 5.      Understand the process of intercultural communication.

\

\ 6.      Apply communication principles and theory in diverse circumstances and demonstrate effective communication, distinguishing effective from less effective responses.

\

\ 7.      Become aware of the stages of relational development and deterioration.

\

\ 8.      Describe the influence of both verbal and nonverbal messages in communication.

\

\ 9.      Demonstrate use of appropriate citations for all reference work used in papers and presentations.

\

\ 10.   Participate in class and group processes.

\ There will be a lot of onine discussions.  It is okay to disagree and to debate, but do it nicely, please.

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.

\

\ However, since this is an online course attendance is not necessary.  It is advised, however, that the student check the online course at least 3 times a week or more for emails and discussion forums.

\ Exams:  There will be 3 major exams that will be taken online and submitted through AC online.

\ Mini Papers and Homework:   There will be at least two mini papers. These mini papers will be submitted online.

\

\ The Semester Project:  Each student will be writing a paper about one of the interpersonal communication principles we will study. This project will also be submitted online

\

\  

\

\ Make up policy:   All papers must be submitted before the deadline given in the assignment.  Any papers not submitted on time will not be accepted, unless special circumstances arise.  The student must talk with the instructor about these special circumstances.

\

\

\   These policies are subject to change, depending on the circumstances that might occur during the semester.

\ Withdrawal from the course: No administrative withdrawals will be initiated by the instructor.  It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the class before the last day deadline.
