End-of-Course Outcomes
Assess various pateint needs; formulate a treatment plan for the medically and dentally compromised patient; and describe advanced instrumentation techniques.
Instructor Objectives for the Course
Chapter objectives will coordinate with the materials presented in lecture, handouts, reading assignments, and exams. The student will know that these objectives have been successfully completed if he or she earns a final course grade of "C" or higher as evaluated by the instructor.
The standard for the objectives may be one or any combination of the following:
1. Identify adrenal glands and outline the disorders of the adrenal glands.
2. Understand the secretory products for adrenal glands.
3. Outline the 3 zones of the adrenal cortex.
4. Name the primary glucocorticoid and discuss the functions and effects of it.
5. Understand the HPA axis and how it is stimulated.
6. Differentiate between mineralocorticoids and adrenal androgens.
7. Differentiate between Addison' disease and Cushing's disease including signs and symptoms, medical and dental management of these conditions.
8. Be familiar with primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency.
9. Be familiar with adrenal crisis and the dental management for adrenal crisis.
10. Understand the dental management of the patient with possible adrenal insufficiency.
11. Differentiate between the glucocorticoids and their relative potency.
12. Recognize oral complications and manifestations associated with primary adrenal insufficiency.
13. Identify thyroid gland and understand the functions of this gland.
14. Differentiate and identify the following diseases: Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Thyroiditis, Thyroid Neoplasms
15. Outline the dental and medical management of these diseases.
16. Understand the significance of enlargement and nodules of the thyroid gland.
17. Understand the significance of thyroid hormone.
18. Identify the tests associated with thyroid function.
19. Be familiar with the signs and symptoms of Graves' Disease.
20. Understand the clinical findings in the patient with thyrotoxicosis.
21. Understand the management of thyrotoxic crisis.
22. Be familiar with signs and symptoms of cretinism.
23. Understand the dental management of the thyrotoxic patient.
24.Be familiar with the medical problems of concern to the dentist in a patient with undiagnosed or poorly controlled thyroid disease.

29. Outline the functions of the different immunoglobulins.
30. Identify and give examples of Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV hypersensitivity reactions.
31. Differentiate between the humoral and cellular functions of the immune system.
32. Identify the signs and symptoms suggestive of an allergic reaction.
33. Identify the signs and symptoms of a toxic reaction to local anesthetic.
34. Identify the signs and symptoms of a psychomotor response to the injection of a local anesthetic.
35. Outline the dental management of a local anesthetic allergy.
36. Outline the procedures for prevention of penicillin reactions.
37. Understand the concepts of antigens.
38. Understand the concept of anaphylaxis and the management in a dental office of a patient who may have anaphylaxis.
39. Differentiate the type of lymphocytes that play central roles in the two branches of the specific immune system.
40. Be familiar with the causes of human anaphylactic reactions of importance to the dentist.
41. Outline the signs and symptoms suggestive of an allergic reaction.
