  2. Assigned homework is to be completed before class.  Homework cannot be completed in class unless the instructor gives permission.
  3. Student dishonesty will not be tolerated (see AC RC Student Handbook).
  4. Disruptions (entering and leaving the classroom, conversations with other students, etc.) during class are to be kept at a minimum.
  5. Turn cell phones off during class.  Vibrating phones or pagers are acceptable unless they disturb the class.  No telephone conversations are permitted in the classroom.   No cell phones are permitted in the classroom during major examinations.

Grading Criteria

Required Work

  1. 5 major exams
  2. Writing assignments (Due:  Oct. 11 and Nov. 29)
  3. Homework assignments
  4. Announced and unannounced quizzes

At the end of the course, all possible points from examinations and other assignments will be totaled.  This total will be the maximum possible points a student could earn.  The number of points earned by a student will be divided by the maximum possible points for the course.  The quotient will be expressed as a percent and converted to a final grade.  The grading scale for this course is:

A  =  90 - 100
B  =  80 - 99
C  =  70 - 89
F  =  score less than 70

Description of Grading Components

  1. If a student is absent for a regularly scheduled examination, the student can take a makeup examination within 1 week but the highest grade a student can earn is 75%.  An examination may not be taken before the scheduled date.  All material given in this course will be tested during the major examinations.
  2. Two writing assignments will be given during the semester.  The writing assignments will be 500 - 750 words in length, typed, and will be over some facet of respiratory care patient assessment.  Writing assignments are due on a specified date, after the date the assignment will be “late” and subject to the 75% maximum rule.  Assignments will NOT be accepted later than 7 days from the due date.
  3. At least 10% of the questions on major exams will come from the reading assignments.
  4. On major exams, the highest point total achieved will be curved to an A and that number of points added to all students results. However, the maximum number of added points will not exceed 10% of the exam point total, providing the possibility that an A will not be achieved.
  5. Rounding of score will take place as follows:  0.5 will round up to the next highest whole number, ex. 69.5 = 70.0.  69.4 will NOT round up.

Remediation Policy

The instructor will meet with students who perform poorly on exams.  Both parties will develop a plan to gain better understanding of the information covered on the test.  The plan may include but not be limited to:

  1. retaking the exam
  2. research of exam topics
  3. written discussion of topics

Attendance

A student who plans to pass this course should also plan to regularly attend all lecture sessions.  Students chronically late for class or those with excessive absences may be at risk for passing this course.  Each student with a tardy/attendance problem will be addressed on an individual basis with the instructor.
