Prerequisites

Course Description

Psychological, physiological and sociological effects of mood altering substances and behaviors and their implications for the addiction process are discussed. Emphasis is placed on pharmacological effects of tolerance, dependency/ withdrawal, cross addiction and drug interaction.

Student Performance

After studying the materials presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:
 
1.         Identify the most pertinent issues in the history of substance use and abuse.
2.         Demonstrate proficiency in explaining drug interaction and the nervous system.
3.         Explain the process of new drug development.
4.         Discuss the major classification of drugs and their effects on the human body.
5.         Demonstrate proficiency in making formal presentation in front of a group.
6.         Be able to assess classes of drugs and how they might impact individual client behaviors.
7.         Be prepared to take the LCDC exam in answering questions related to pharmacological issues.

Expected Student Behavior

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:
 

1.  Arrive to class on time and stay for the whole class period.

2. Make sure cell phones are turned OFF before entering the classroom!   No texting in the classroom.  You will be asked to leave if your cell phone disrupts the class. You can leave your cell phone on vibration mode with professor's permission.  DO NOT LEAVE AND RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM IN ORDER TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE!  IT IS DISRUPTIVE AND RUDE! 

PLEASE NOTE:  If you leave the classroom to answer your phone, you will not be allowed back in the class for the day.

Grading Criteria

The grade in the lecture course will be determined by the results in three areas: (1) the average of the eight tests-65% (2) class participation-10% (3) class presentation-25%.
 
 The grading schedule is as follows:
 
            A = 90 to 100
            B = 80 to 89
            C = 70 to 79
            D = 60 to 69
            F = Below 60

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Regular attendance is essential to the successful completion of the course. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP A COURSE OR WITHDRAW FROM COLLEGE. Your instructor can not do this for you. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”.
 
*The last day to withdraw or to drop a class/change from credit to audit is November 16, 2011.
Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have with your progress in this course with the instructor.

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed learning objectives with a minimum of 70 percent competency level based on the completion of eight tests. In addition the student will be responsible for a class presentation.
 
This course will provide information to the student which will assist the individual in building a knowledge base on drugs which includes the following:
