DAAC-2341-001 Counseling Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions

Prerequisites: DAAC 1314 and DAAC 1317

Course Description

Course will focus on special skills and techniques in the application of counseling skills for the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) client. Design and utilization of treatment planning using a treatment team approach will be introduced. Confidentiality and ethical issues will be reviewed and practiced.

Student Performance

\ By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the learning objectives with a minimum of 70% competency level based on completion of 3 oral tapes of individual sessions and participation in mock group settings.

\ This course will provide the knowledge for the beginning alcohol and drug counselor in the following areas:

\ a. Transparency of counselor to client
\ b. Review of counseling skills necessary for individual and group counseling
\ c. Individual counseling skills for Reality Therapy
\ d. Individual counseling skills for Behavior Modification
\ e. Individual counseling skills for Cognitive-Behavior Therapy

Expected Student Behavior

\ 1. Arrive to class on time and stay for the whole class period.

\ 2. Make sure cell phones are turned OFF before entering the classroom!   No texting in the classroom.  You will be asked to leave if your cell phone disrupts the class. You can leave your cell phone on vibration mode with professor's permission.  DO NOT LEAVE AND RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM IN ORDER TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE!  IT IS DISRUPTIVE AND RUDE!

\ PLEASE NOTE:  If you leave the classroom to answer your phone, you will not be allowed back in the class for the day.

\ 3. Personal topics/ideas/history will be discussed in this class. Professional confidentiality is to be observed at all times. Violation will mean expulsion from the course.

Grading Criteria

The grade in the lecture course will be determined by the results in four areas:
1. Three oral tapes of 30 minutes each (25%)
2. Didactic Group Lecture (20%)
3. Class demonstration of individual and group counseling skills (40%)
4. One written test (15%)

A = 90=100
B = 80 to 89
C = 70 to 79
D = 60 to 69
F = Below 60

*The last day to withdraw or to drop a class/change from credit to audit is November 16, 2011. Please feel free to discuss and concerns you may have with your progress in this course with the instructor.


There are no makeup opportunities for this class.

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential to the successful completion of the course. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP A COURSE OR WITHDRAW FROM COLLEGE. Your instructor can not do this for you. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of "F"
