Skill development in the operation of the keyboard by touch applying proper keyboarding techniques. Emphasis on development of acceptable speed and accuracy levels and formatting basic documents.

  2. Student Performance

    After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program.

    The student will demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques including touch technique; demonstrate an acceptable level of keyboarding skills with a minimum speed of 30 words per minute (wpm) with minimum proficiency; apply proofreading and editing skills; and create basic documents.

    The student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the Office Administration Department.

    1. Demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques including touch technique. *(C5,C6,C7,C8,F5,F7,F10,F13)
    2. Demonstrate an acceptable level of keyboarding skills with a minimum speed of 20 correct words per minute (cwpm) by touch. *(C7,C8,C15,F10,F13)
    3. Apply proofreading and editing skills.*(C5,C6,C7,C8,C15,C18,F1, F5,F9,F12)
    4. Create basic business documents.* (C3,C7,C8,C15,C16,C18,F1,F5, F7,F8,F9,F13,F16)

      *(Refers to the SCANS-the Secretary`s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The SCANS will be explained by your instructor at the first class meeting.)

    Weekly Lab Assignments:     10%
    Speed Accuracy Tests           30%
    Production Tests                    60%
    Semester Grade                    100%

    Weekly Lab Assignments

    Weekly lab assignments are due by 7:00 p.m. each Tuesday Evening. There are NO exceptions to this. No late lab assignments will be accepted for any reason.

    Speed/Accuracy Tests

    Your two best five-minute writings will be averaged to determine your final Speed/Accuracy Test Grade. Timings with five or less mistakes will be counted as long as the speed is 22 words per minute or above. The chart below indicates grades for the following speeds.

    38 – 42             89
    33 – 37             79
    30 – 32             69
    29 – 22             50
    Below 22            0

    Production Tests

    There are three production tests—NO makeup production tests will be given for ANY reason. The three production test grades will be averaged for your Production Test Grade.

    Other

    If you have NO absences or tardies during the semester, three points will be added to your semester grade.

    Attendance

    Employees in the business world are expected to be at work promptly each day; therefore, students in business classes are expected to be in class promptly each day. This class meets once each week. After one absence for any reason, two points will be deducted from the semester average for each absence. There are no excused absences. Three tardies equal one absence.  If you leave class for any reason while the class is being conducted, it will be counted as a tardy.  If you are more than five minutes late to a class, it will be counted as an absence.
