Prerequisites

Course Description

Causes and consequences of addiction as they relate to the individual, family, community and society are discussed. Response alternatives regarding intervention, treatment, education and prevention are reviewed. Competencies and requirements for licensure in Texas are explained. Addiction issues related to diverse populations are presented.

Becoming an Addictions Counselor:  A Comprehensive Text, 2nd edition, by Myers and Salt

Student Performance

After studying the material presented in this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the history of substance abuse counseling in the U.S.
  2. Define and discuss the disease concept.
  3. Define and discuss the ego defense mechanism of denial as it relates to substance abuse.
  4. List and discuss the elements of basic counseling skills.
  5. List basic group treatment concepts.
  6. Discuss treatment planning.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of culture on substance abuse.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to follow all Amarillo College policies and procedures.  In addition, you will need to:

1.  Arrive to class on time and stay for the whole class period.
2.  Make sure cell phones are turned OFF before entering the classroom! You will be asked to leave if your cell phone disrupts the class. You can leave it on vibration mode - p.r.n.

Grading Criteria

The grade in the lecture course will be determined by the results in three areas:  1) 3 tests (50%); 2) Project (30%) and 3) Class attendance and participation (20%).

The grading schedule is as follows:

A = 90 to 100
B = 80 to 89
C = 70 to 79
D = 60 to 69
F = Below 60
 

The last day to withdraw or drop a class/change from credit to audit is November 16, 2011.  Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have with your progress in this course with the instructor.

Attendance

Attendance is necessary for successful completion of the course.  IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP A COURSE OR WITHDRAW FROM COLLEGE.  Your instructor cannot do this for you.  Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of "F".

Additional Information

Project:

You are required to attend a minimum of 4 Alcoholics Anonymous, AL ANON or NArcotics ANonymous Meetings each.  You are to write a journal of impressions of each meeting.  You must attend a minimum of three different groups.  If you are currently in a self-help group, you need to attend other groups and organizations.

You are to attend open meetings only.

Alternate Project:

Red and review the Big Book of AL ANON or Narcotics Anonymous.  Write a paper (minimum of 10 pages) on this book.  See professor for details.
