Course Description

Essentials of an adequate diet for different age groups; nutritive values of foods. Emphasis is placed on psychological, social and economic influence of food habits.

 Upon completion of this course the students will be able to:

  1. Understand the role of nutrition as it affects human health and well being.
  2. Understand the function of the major nutrients and their impact on the human body.
  3. Understand the role nutrition plays in disease prevention and treatment.
  4. Understand individual nutrient requirements as affected by stages of life, activity level, and/or disease.
  5. Evaluate popular claims and theories relating to nutrition.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of various special diet regimens.
  7. Understand the use of appropriate reference materials for obtaining food and nutrition information.
  8. Apply the principles of good nutrition in selecting a personal diet.

Expected Student Behavior

\  General Information: 

\

\ 1.  Respect is critical in this course.  Respecting all class members and instructor opinions is mandatory.

\

\ 2.  All conversations should be related to the discussion of material in this class.  Private conversations, texting, surfing the net etc., is a disruption and will not be permitted.

\

\ 3.  Cell phones detract from the learning environment.  If you must have a pager or cell phone for reasons of work or family emergency, visit with instructor in advance to clear this need.

\

\ 4.  Campus policy does not permit minor children to attend classes with parents or to remain unattended on campus. 

\

\ 5.  Visitors may not attend class without prior permission.

\

\ 6.  Cheating in any form will not be tolerated.  Assignments which bear a striking resemblance to the work of other students will not be accepted.  Any form of cheating will result in no points for that assignment and possible dicipline procedures. 

Grading Criteria

\  The purpose of a test is to determine your knowledge gained in a subject matter area.  Your success in health-care knowledge and in caring for others must be based upon YOUR knowledge gained -- not on how much your classmate knows.  CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.  If it should become apparent that you are collaborating on test, appropriate measures will be taken including the possibility of receiving an "F" in the class and being dropped from the course with no refund or monies, an appearance in front of your professor and AC'S Disciplinary Committee, and/or possible suspension from AC for the current term or longer.  Additional information is contained in AC's Student Rights and Responsibiities, a copy which can be obtained by asking at AC Assistance Center, or go online to Forms and Policies.

\ There will be 4 test grades and one project grade as well as some weekly assignments.   Your course grade will be the average of test, projects and other assignments.   

\

\ Grading Scale will be: 

\

\ 89.5 - 100 =A

\

\ 79.5 -  89.4=B

\

\ 69.5 -  79.4=C

\

\ 59.5 - 69.4=D

\

\ 59.4 or below =F

\

\ If you determine that you have an emergency that prevents you from taking the test, this instructor must be notified IN ADVANCE.  I may be reached by cell or office phone.  Make-up exams will be allowed at the professor's discretion.  Make-up exams will automatically lose 10% of their original value to be fair to students who take the exams during the scheduled time.  If granted permission for a make-up exam, that exam must be taken in one week from scheduled date.  Test will be available in the Moore Campus testing center.  Allow two hours before the testing center closes to take the exam. 

\

\ The FINAL EXAM is mandatory and must be taken as the final schedule is printed by the college.  There is no opportunity for a make-up exam on the final.  The final exam must be taken or a grade of "F" will be recorded. 

\

\ Assignments will lose 30% of their value if one week late of scheduled time and 60% if later than one week after scheduled due date.  All assignments are due at the beginning of the class and will be considered late it not turned in at that time. 

Attendance

\  Attendance in class is an integral part to student success in HECO 1322.  You are a consumer of your education dollars.  Use your dollars and time wisely to gain the best knowledge.  There is much information that is taught in class and each student needs to be present to understand and gain that information.  It is your responsibility, if an absence is necessary, to obtain handouts, notes etc. you missed. 

\

\ If inclement weather closes the campus you will NOT be penalized for not completing the assignment due -- but  be aware that the next class period all work will be due and if a test was scheduled the test will be given the very next class period.  If scheduled class was to include lecture you will be responsible for reading and studying those chapters missed.  Students should be certain to check the last day to drop a class.  Dropping or withdrawing from a class may affect scholarships or financial aid, so check with a financial aid couselor or an advisor before you drop or withdraw from class.  If you are concerned about your class average, visit with your professor before dropping -- do NOT just quit attending class as that can damage your grade point average.  Officially drop by the drop deadline.

Additional Information

Weather Issues: 

Inclement weather information may be obtained by calling instructor or calling the Moore County Campus.  This issue will be discussed in class and plans made to secure a method that students driving in from areas other than Dumas will have adequate notification.   It will be the students responsibility to read and study information missed on those class days.
