Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact disAbility Services (Student Service Center room 119, phone 371-5436) as soon as possible.
As a student you may experience a range of issues that can cause barriers to learning, such as strained relationships, increased anxiety, alcohol/drug problems, feeling down, difficulty concentrating and/or lack of motivation. These mental health concerns or stressful events may lead to diminished academic performance or reduce a student's ability to participate in daily activities. Amarillo College offers services to assist you with addressing these and other concerns you may be experiencing. If you or someone you know are suffering from any of the aforementioned conditions, you can learn more about the broad range of confidential mental health services available on campus by calling the AC Counseling Center at 806-371-5900. The AC Counseling Center website is https://www.actx.edu/counseling/ . Also, if you are in need of social services (affordable housing, utilities, transportation, food, clothing, childcare, medical/dental/vision, legal), please call the AC Advocacy & Resource Center at 806-371-5439. On Campus Course
\ Blitzer College Algebra, Fifth Edition...Author: Robert Blitzer, Prentice Hall Publishing Co.
\ Course Materials:
\Learning Objectives: After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:
In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .
If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".
\ Student Responsibilities: Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to the following: the use of cellular phones, texting, making offensive remarks, reading newspapers, talking, use of personal music systems, doing homework or other personal projects during the lecture, or engaging in any other form of distraction. For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook http://sites.actx.edu/catalog/notices/. Cheating is defined in Webster’s College Dictionary as “taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers.” Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper, copying from the homework solutions manual, or using any unauthorized sources of information while taking an exam or quiz. If the instructor sees a cell phone out during any exam, the instructor will assume that student is cheating and the exam will be taken up and a grade of a zero will be received on that exam. Any student who cheats on an exam or quiz will receive a grade of zero for that exam or quiz and that grade may NOT be dropped. . Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action.
\\ Food/Drink: It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that food and drink be allowed in the classroom setting, at the instructor’s discretion. Food and drink are not allowed in the computer labs.
\\ Phones/Pagers: It is the policy of the Mathematics & Engineering Department that cell phones and pagers must be turned off or in silent mode in the classrooms and the computer labs.
Homework: Expect to have a homework assignment after each class period in this course. Homework will be assigned from the book and optionally online. Both will be graded and recorded throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, I will drop your two lowest homework assignments.
My Math Lab Instructions: To access My Math Lab where your online homework is located, go to www.coursecompass.com. You will need the following information: Course ID: clowe78251, Student Access Code: This can be found in the My Math Lab kit inside the front cover of your new textbook or you can purchase access online with a credit card during the registration process.
To Register and Enroll:
Exams: Exams must be taken in pencil. The tentative exam dates are as follows:
These exam dates are subject to change, but I will give prior notice if they do. It is the policy of the Amarillo College Math Department that NO make-up exams be given after the exam has been administered to the rest of the class. If you know that you are going to miss an exam in advance, you MUST make arrangements with your instructor to take the exam early in the AC Testing Center located in the Student Services Building. At the end of the semester, I will replace ONE lowest exam grade with the grade you make on your Final exam minus 10 points, provided this score is higher than an exam grade. If you miss an exam, it will count as your replacement exam and will not be made up. The Final exam score may not be dropped. If you miss two exams, the final will replace only one of these zeros.
Final: The comprehensive final will be given on the following date as directed by the official Amarillo College Schedule. If you wish to take your Final exam early, you may make arrangements with your instructor to take it early in the AC Testing Center.

Other Student Resources to get help with your math homework assignments:
Free online tutoring at Smarthinking on MyAC. This is available 24 hours a day. You will need to log on to MyAC, click on Academics, click on Tutoring, then create an account.
USING AC Online TO GET YOUR GRADES, CONTACT YOUR INSTRUCTOR, FIND CLASS ANNOUNCEMENTS, etc.: I will use AC Online to post your grades and to communicate with you via e-mail. You can click AC Online from the AC home page and then login to find our class. Once you are inside our class, you can check your grades and send me e-mails. If an emergency arises and you can’t come to class, contact me immediately. Most instructors will work with you if you communicate with them quickly. If you wait a week or two to talk to your instructors, they tend not to be very understanding. If you know you are going to be absent, let me know ahead of the absence rather than afterward and we can work out some arrangement which can help you in this class. I expect you to e-mail me why you are absent from class. That lets me know that you care and that you are not just skipping. I truly appreciate your keeping in touch with me.
TEAMWORK: This class requires that we work together as a team. My part is to present the material to you in an organized manner and to teach you. I will have to go at a quick pace at the beginning of the semester because the harder material is toward the end of the semester. We will slow down once we get past Section 1.4. Your part is to come to class, do your homework and reviews, and come to tutoring or to my office for help. I look forward to working together this semester!
Extra Credit points: The only opportunity for you to earn extra points that can be added to your lowest exam score is within the first two weeks of school. In order to qualify, you must complete and turn in the green pages (pg. 3-6) in the College Algebra Course Manual by Wednesday, September 7th. These pages cover the prerequisites chapter of our text and this material should already be familiar to you. If the extra credit pages are completed within the time limit, those points will be added to your lowest exam score.
This course meets in the Engineering Building in room E207
Attendance: Attendance is mandatory and will be taken at EVERY class period. It is your responsibility to make sure that I have marked you present for each class by signing the attendance sheet that is distributed at the beginning of each class period. You will have 2 “free” absences and for every absence after that, your attendance grade will drop 20 points (i.e. 3 absences = 80, 4 absences = 60, 5 absences = 40, 7 or more absences = 0). If you are absent for any reason, YOU are responsible for all make-up work and notes. Please find a classmate to copy their class notes, as I do not make copies of my personal lecture notes. Remember that the deadline for withdrawing from any class at AC for Fall 2011 Semester is Wednesday, November 16th . If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.
