Course Description

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

End of Course Outcomes:

As outlined in the learning plan, apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry.

Course Outcomes:

PROVIDER OF CARE

  1. Uses expanded assessment to determine the health status of children and families including interpretation of health data and preventive health practices in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members who embrace the client’s preferences and values and includes them in the decision-making process.
  2. Evaluates data from information technologies that enhances communication among interdisciplinary team members in order to provide safe and therapeutic client care.
  3. Correlates clinical data with evidence-based research (best practices) to determine priority nursing interventions to ensure safe care of clients.
  4. Formulates goals and outcomes and plan of care based on nursing diagnoses in collaboration with clients and families and interdisciplinary team members.
  5. Implements a plan of care within legal and ethical guidelines, including scope of professional nurse practice, in collaboration with clients and families and interdisciplinary team members in meeting healthcare needs.
  6. Evaluates client and family responses and outcomes to nursing interventions and identifies opportunities to improve the quality of care to clients.
  7. Demonstrates caring behaviors when collaborating with clients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  8. Incorporates previous knowledge and skills to provide culturally competent care to a diverse client population.

  1. Coordinates human and material resources (including equipment and information technologies) in the provision of care for clients and families.
  2. Collaborates with clients and families and interdisciplinary team for planning and the delivery of care.
  3. Integrates use of technologies and safety devices with effective communication to prevent harm to clients.

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that distracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Grading Criteria

 

Refer to Clinical Performance Evaluation of Competencies (CPEC) in Course Manual.

Grading Criteria/Grade Scale:

  1. The following criteria will be used to determine your grade:

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 60-69

F = below 60

  1. 70% of the clinical grade is determined by the performance of clinical competencies on the Clinical Performance Evaluation of Competencies (CPEC). Competencies will be assigned a “3”, “2”, “1” or “0”. A score of “0” in one or more competencies will result in clinical failure see. Please see the CPEC guidelines in the course manual.
  2. 15% of the clinical grade is determined by the safety project as assigned.
  3. 15% of the clinical grade is determined by the medication administration return demonstration.
  4. Students must attend and participate in all clinical simulation experiences.

Must achieve 100% on the Level III Dosage and Solution Exam.  The exam may be repeated twice prior to clinical experience.  Failure to pass this exam by the third attempt will result in the inability to attend the clinical experience and meet the course objectives.  This means that the student will fail the clinical course if they do not achieve a 100% on the exam by the third attempt.

Student will not be allowed to participate in the clinical experience without current immunizations, TB skin testing, and American Heart Association CPR for Healthcare Providers.  It is the students' responsibility to ensure that all documentation is presented in a timely manner prior to the clinical experience.  A Class II Clinical Warning will be issued for no documentation.

Students will meet the requirement of 100% attendance.  No more than two (1) clinical day may be made up for any one rotation.  Absences due to work schedules or vacations will not be excused.  Students who arrive more than 30 minutes late to clinical will be required to make up the clinical day.  Students who do not make up clinical absences or miss more than two (1) clinical days in a semester will fail the clinical course. 

Clinical rotations include, but are not limited to, scheduled days at the hospital with a preceptor and clinical instructor, clinical orientation, dosage and solution exam, and clinical simulation as provided in the course calendar.

Attendance

Attendance Policy:

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend clinical. Students must attend 100% of the clinical days.

 Make-up Policy:

Must meet the requirement of 100% attendance. No more than one (1) clinical day/experience may be made up due to illness or other unexpected circumstance during the semester/this rotation. Absences due to work schedules or vacations will not be excused. Students who arrive more than 30 minutes late to clinical will be required to make up that clinical day. Students who do not make up clinical absences or miss more than one (1) clinical day during this rotation/semester will fail the clinical course.

Calendar

Student will have 48 hours of clinical time. Clinical calendars will be distributed during the first week of class.  Clinical groups will be assigned to specific blocks of time as outlined in the calendar.
