Student Performance

After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

1. Recognize, solve, and apply radical, absolute value, linear, quadratic, and rational equations
2. Recognize, solve, and apply inequalities
3. Recognize, solve, graph, and apply polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions
4. Explore functions, graphing techniques, operations of functions, composition of functions, and inverse functions.
5. Evaluate all real roots of higher degrees of polynomials
6. Recognize, solve, and apply systems of linear equations, including the use of matrices and matrix algebra
7. Identify sequences and series, and calculate the sum of a sequence

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to behave in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and studentresponsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook.  Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or AC’s Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action which may include, but is not limited to: removal from the classroom, consultation with the Math & Engineering Department Chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or Amarillo College.

\ Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper, using unauthorized sources of information on any assignment, turning in work that is not your own (copied from the solution manual, having someone else do your work, etc.), and allowing someone to cheat. Any student who cheats will receive a grade of zero for that assignment (grade may NOT be dropped or replaced) and/or other disciplinary action as described in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.

\ Students will not be allowed to work on assignments for other classes, personal projects, or any other distracting activities.  If students continue to work on activities not related to this course, they will be counted absent.

Grading Criteria

Participation:  Your participation grade will be calculated based on an introduction email and posts that you make on the message boards on AC Online and will make up 5% of your average.

You must send me an email to MandiWheeler@amarillocollege.com with your name as the subject line.  In the body of the email, introduce yourself and answer the following questions using correct grammar and punctuation. 

1. Why you are taking this class?  What do you hope to get out of it?
2. What grade do you expect to earn?
3. What might interfere with your success in this course?
4. Are you willing to committ to the time required to be successful in this course?
5. What is one thing that I should know about you?

You are required to make a total of 8 posts to the message boards on AC Online.  For a post to count, it satisfy the following:

1. Either asking or answering a question about the material ("What is on the test?" is not about the material).
2. Written with correct grammar and punctuation (The word "I" is capitalized and the word "you" has three letters).
3. Asking a specific and unique question (you cannot ask "What do I do on this problem?")
4. Answering a question with a unique and correct answer (You cannot answer a question that has already been answered)

Lecture Notes:  There are questions imbedded in the lecture notes on AC Online.  You will have to answer these questions in order to get credit for the section.  These questions will count for 5% of your overall grade.

Homework: Homework will be assigned using MyMathLab.  No late work will be accepted, so complete all assignments on time.  I will drop TWO grades and the remaining will count as 15% of your average.  There is an introduction assignment that includes materia that you should know.  You will have to complete this assignment with a grade of 70% or better before the other assignments will become available.  The assignments will be due by 11:59 pm on Mondays and Thursdays.  The link to the  homework (www.coursecompass.com) is on the course page of AC Online.

Quizzes: There will be two quizzes each week completed on MyMathLab, due by 11:59 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays.  These quizzes will not become available until the associated homework assignment(s) are completed with a score of at least 70%.  This means that if you don't complete the homework, you will not even have the chance to take the quiz.  It is expected that you complete the quizzes without the assistance of books, notes, or other people.  The lowest quiz grade will be dropped and the remaining quizzes will count as 15% of your average.

Exams: There will be seven chapter tests that will be completed on MyMathLab.  It is expected that you complete the tests without the assistance of books, notes, or other people. 

Midterm and Final Exams: The midterm will be taken in person either in the AC Testing Center or with an approved proctor between Oct 17-21 and will be worth 20% of your overall average.  The final will be taken in person either in the AC Testing Center or with an approved proctor between Nov 30- Dec 6 and will be worth 20% of your overall average. 

Other Information:  Before you ask, I do not give extra credit.  The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to meet these requirements. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.

The deadline for dropping is Wednesday, November 16th.  If you stop participating in the class and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive the grade you earned the course counting all missed assignments.
