Walking for fitness - indoors and outdoors and/or using treadmills. Self-paced class where programs vary depending upon each individual’s fitness level.

Student Performance

\ By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed learning objectives with a minimum 70% competency level based upon regular participation in moderate fitness activities and completion of required assignments. Also the student will:

\

\ 1.Complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionaire.
\ 2. Set specific long term and short term goals and monitor progress throughout the semester.
\ 3. Keep a daily log of exercise activities.
\ 4. Determine fitness level based upon a one mile walking test.
\ 5. Identify a walking program and progress through it during the semester.
\ 6. Locate the carotid and radial artery for the purpose of counting heart beats per minute.
\ 7. Determine an individual exercise training zone (target heart rate) using either a chart and the Karvonen method.
\ 8. Complete all assignments weekly as listed by date in the COURSE CONTENT(accessed through "course content" link on homepage).
\ 9. Acquire essential skills for making positive behavior changes in the areas of Nutrition, Fitness, Stress Management and Weight
\ Management.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to follow all Amarillo College and Carter Fitness Center policies and procedures.

Grading Criteria

\ 1. Course activities - 30%
\ -Read Syllabus, Read Walking literature, Complete ParQ and Waiver of Liability
\ -Determine Fitness Level, Choose Prescribed Walking Program
\ -Bulletin Board Assignment #1- Introduce Yourself to the class
\ -Read Goal Setting Instructions, Complete and Submit Goal Setting Worksheet
\ -Surf the Web/BB Assign. #3- Post Comments and website on BB
\ -Bulletin Board Assignment #2- Respond to 3 Other Student's Postings

\ 2. One Mile Walking Tests - 50%
\ ONE SELF ADMINISTERED ONE MILE WALKING TEST AND THREE PROCTORED ONE MILE WALKING TESTS are required during the semester. Progress in fitness level between tests must be demonstrated by a lowered heart rate and/or faster time to walk the mile. Heart rate and time will be measured by a heart rate monitor and timer. A grade will be given for each one mile walk test based upon COMPLETION of the test and IMPROVEMENT from one test to the next. The walking test will be adapted for students who are physically unable to walk one mile. Students who rank Level 5(highest rank) on the Rockport Walking Test will not be required to improve, but only maintain heart rate and time. WALKING TESTS WILL BE ADMINISTERED AT CARTER FITNESS CENTER- SOUTH GYM. DATES AND TIMES OF THE WALKING TESTS ARE LISTED in the online calendar(come and go during these times). Please wear appropriate clothing:

\ 3. Attendance - 20% (Based upon online exercise log)
\ Only ONE walk per day may be logged towards attendance grade. The online exercise log may be accessed through the “Walk Log" link . EXERCISE MUST BE LOGGED WEEKLY . The exercise log can be accessed weekly during the specified dates for that week. The DEADLINE to log exercise is Monday of each week at 12:00 noon. DEADLINE DATES for each week may be seen on the Course Calendar. If you miss the deadline for a week YOUR ATTENDANCE GRADE WILL BE AFFECTED. One week may be made up on the "Make-up Log Form" located at the bottom of the Course Content.
\ At least 39 walks total = 100
\ At least 36 walks total = 92
\ At least 33 walks total = 85
\ At least 30 walks total = 77
\ At least 27 walks total = 69
\ At least 24 walks total = 61
\ At least 21 walks total = 54
\ At least 18 walks total = 46
\ At least 15 walks total = 39
\ At least 12 walks total = 31

\ Students who do not finish the course and who do not formally drop the course through the Registrar’s Office
\ will receive a grade of F.

\ MAKEUP POLICY: Only one make-up week for the walking log is allowed. The make-up log is located at the bottom of the Walking Log page. All other missed assignments must be made up with the instructor’s permission.

\

\ REQUIRED EXAMS: One self one mile walk test. Three proctored one mile walk tests. Administered on campus.

Attendance

\ This is an online course. Attendance is required for two on campus meetings (dates will be posted on the class site). Weekly assignments are assigned requiring the student to log on to the course weekly. Three on campus meetings are required for the proctored walk tests. If the student is not able to attend the proctored walk tests, a proctor(trainer, coach, or other fitness professional) must be aquired with instructors approval.

\ STUDENT ID CARDS:  Students MUST use their AC College IDs to gain entry into Carter Fitness Center. Students are allowed three entries without IDs, after three no-card entries, you will not be allowed into the gym/class until a new card has been purchased.

\ LOCKER POLICY:  Lockers will be rented beginning at noon on the third class day of each semester on a first come first served basis. Lockers must be paid for on a semester by semester basis because of the limited number of lockers available. Lockers must be cleaned out by the announced due date. Items left in the lockers after this time will be placed in the lost and found. The center lockers may be used on a daily basis only with no fees. All areas of the fitness center are available during the open times.
