Department Expectations

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Student Performance

\ After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will develop the ability to "hear mentally" a piece of music without recourse to an instrument.  To accomplish this, the student develops sight singing skills using correct rhythms and pitches and also the skill of taking down music from dictation.  Each student must develop this "hearing eye" and "seeing ear" or "aural imagery" as it is sometimes called.  The student will also be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

\

\

\

\ 1. Clap rhythms using duplet and triplet rhythm patterns in simple and compound meter.

\

\

\

\

\

\

\

\ 2. Take rhythmic dictation of two measures or more in simple and compound meter.

\

\

\

\ 3. Sight sing easy melodies in major and minor keys at performance tempi using solfeggio system with moveable "do".

\

\

\

\  4.Take melodic dictation of four or more measure phrases involving all intervals.

\

\

\

\  5.Recognize all major, minor and perfect intervals as well as augmented 4ths and diminished 5ths.

\

\

\

\  6.Sing and be able to take from dictation all the above mentioned intervals.

\

\

\

\  7.Take one and two measure harmonic dictation of I, ii, IV, V and vi chords with occasional I 6/4 at cadence.

\

\

\

\ 8. Begin to recognize non harmonic tones in dictation.

\

\

\ Each student will be proficient on all learning objectives.
