A continuation of PHED 1116. Focus on firming, toning and losing inches. Targets abdominal muscles, glutes, hips and thighs but also includes toning exercises for the entire body.

Student Performance

\ By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed learning objectives with a minimum 70% competency level based upon regular participation in moderate fitness activities and completion of required assignments. Also the student will:
\ 1. Complete a medical history assessment and a pre and post fitness evaluation.
\ 2. Set specific long term and short term goals and monitor progress throughout the semester.
\ 3. Keep a daily log of exercise activities.
\ 4. Define frequency, intensity, and duration of exercise.
\ 5. Identify an aerobic conditioning program and progress through it during the semester.
\ 6. Locate the carotoid and radial artery for the purpose of counting heart beats per minute.
\ 7. Determine an individual exercise training zone (target heart rate) using both a chart and the Karvonen method.
\ 8. Learn what the warm-up, aerobic exercise, and cool down phases of exercise are.
\ 9. Become familiar with various aerobic exercise machines (stair, airdyne, treadmill).
\ 10. Acquire essential skills for making positive behavior changes in the areas of Nutrition, Fitness, Stress Management and Weight Management
\ 11. Choose and participate in an exercise program throughout the semester.
\ 12. Complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionaire(PAR-Q) form.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to follow all Amarillo College and Carter Fitness Center policies and procedures.

\ Cell phones must be on silent mode while in this class. Phones may be monitored for emergency calls only, provided the isntructor has been made aware of the necessity.

\

\ You will be required to scan in each time you visit the facility. To do this, you must have a current student ID card and bring it with you EVERY time you visit Carter Fitness Center. IDs are made in the Assistance Center located in the Student Service Center.

Grading Criteria

\ 1. Attendance = 90%
\ 2. Assessment = 10%

\ A= NO abscences  B= 1 abscense   C= 2 abscences   D= 3 abscences F= 4 or more abscences

\ *Instructor uses the standard grade scale: A = 90-100; B = 80-89; C = 70-79; D = 60-69; F+<60.

\ MAKEUP POLICY:  You will be allowed only three makeups equivalent to the class time of 60 minutes. Makeups will be done at the Carter Fitness Center. You will ask for a make-up sheet at the front desk and sign out when you leave. You MUST exercise in order to get credit for the make-up.

\ REQUIRED ASSESSMENTS:
\ There will be pre and post physical assessments administered by the instructor. You MUST be present for both the pre and post assessments on the days that they are administered.

\ ATTIRE:

Any student not attired appropriately will be asked to leave class and no attendance will be recorded.

\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Students must attend the ENTIRE class for the attendance to be recorded. No exceptions.

Additional Information

\ This is a physical activity program that includes a blend of strength training for the lower body combined with an abdominal workout.  Incorporated into the workout will be the use of bands, tubes, handheld weights, body bars, body weight, exercise balls, medicine balls and BOSU domes. The domes combine integrated balancing movements to provide a functional workout that will include aerobic/cardio and
\ strength conditioning.

\ This course is designed to strengthen and tone lower body muscles and create a strong core through specific activities as outlined in the course description.

\

\ By the end of this course the student will be able to:

\

\ 1. Locate the carotid and radial arteries for the purpose of counting heart beats per 10-second count to check heart rate, especially for cardio conditioning activities.
\ 2. Learn how to use an individual exercise benefit zone (target heart rate) using perceived exersion scale.
\ 3. Know the three basic components to a fitness program (warmup, exercise activity, cooldown).
