 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Understanding purposes and processes in the visual and musical arts including evaluation of selected works. (AC Catalog, ACGM) Student Learning Outcomes are based on the required Core Curriculum Intellectual Competencies (pg. 230), Perspectives (pg. 231) and Exemplary Educational Objectives (pg. 234) as defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Specific Course Requirements are to be found in the course schedule and course syllabus.

 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (CCIC 1,2,3,4,5,6 CCP 1,2,5,6,8 EEOHPVA 1,2,5,6,8): The following are the learning objectives of all Humanities 1301 and 1315 courses taught at Amarillo College. The emphasis of these objectives concerns the appreciation of the fine and performing arts.
1.  To demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities.
2.  To understand those works as expressions of individual and human values within an historical and social context.
3.  To respond critically to a variety of exhibitions and performances.
4.  To engage in the creative process or interpretive performance and comprehend the physical and intellectual demands required of the author or visual or performing artist.
5.  To articulate an informed personal reaction to works in the arts and humanities.
6.  To develop an appreciation for the aesthetic principles that guide or govern the humanities and arts.
7.  To demonstrate knowledge of the influence of literature, philosophy, and/or the arts on intercultural experiences.

Expected Student Behavior

\ All students are required to follow the AC Student Rights/Responsiblities Statement, and conduct themselves accordingly in all matters pertaining to this class.

\ Cell Phone/ Personal Computer Policy:  In order to not interrupt the class session, students are asked to turn off all cell phones and pagers prior to the beginning of class. Personal computers are to be used strictly for notes and accessing course material. Improper use of cell phones and personal computers during class time includes checking personal email, personal web pages, and texting will not be tolerated. It is the responsibility of students to advise the instructor before class of special circumstances that may require communication from home.

Grading Criteria

1. Four "Performances - Based" Essays (each 12 1/2%)

2. A critical essay entitled The Arts in Amarillo.  Students will evaluate the performing arts in Amarillo, based on the events and perceived quality of the performances/exhibitions. (12 1/2 %)

3. An essay on an artist, or work of art, of the student's choice.  The focus of the essay should be ont he significance of the artist's work, in the opinion of the student!  A required component of this assignment is a student presentation, using visuals or power point, relating key information regarding the subject.  Presentations will be scheduled the latter part of the semester.

4. Two tests (12 1/2% each)

All writing will be placed in a student portfolio.  All essays are to be at least two pages in length, double - spaced, properly paragraphed, grammatically correct and free of the personal pronoun.  Papers that do not follow the collegiate form will not be accepted!

Students missing a test will need to contact me ASAP (preferably before, but, at least, on the day missed) to make arrangements for make - up in Testing and Counseling.  Please call my home phone.  This is very important!  Oterhwise students will automatically receive a "0!"  Please leave clear meesages, especially phone numbers!

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Students with frequent absences, as well as those who leave prior to dismissal, not only risk refusal of any extra credit, but inevitably realize lower academic performance because of missed material.
