\ Public Speaking Objectives

\\ Course Objectives: After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program.
\\
\\
1. Define and explain basic communication terms and principles which undergird competent communication. (Communication model)
\
2. Demonstrate knowledge of theory and competence in preparing and presenting informative and persuasive speeches and in group tasks.
\
3. Apply communication principles and theory in diverse circumstances and demonstrate effective communication, distinguishing effective from less effective responses.
\
4. Demonstrate use of appropriate citations for all reference work used in papers and presentations.
\
5. Define and discuss how best to avoid plagiarism.
\
6. Participate in class and group processes while demonstrating respect for classmates.
\
7. Develop listening skills and critical thinking skills.
\ 8. Select topics and develop speeches of various styles for various occasions that are audience appropriate.
\\ 9. Use visual aids in presentation to enhance communication.

\ Class Policies:
\\ · This is a participation class; regular attendance is essential and each person a vital part of the class. It is also an important part of the learning experience. All students are expected to participate and participation grades will be given. Two absences can lower your grade one level. Do NOT be absent the day a speech or project is assigned.
\\ · All speeches/projects must be delivered on the assigned days. If there are suitable extenuating circumstances, other arrangements might be made. Approval must be obtained from the instructor prior to the day the speech is scheduled. A late performance (only one class day late is acceptable) will result in 30 points being deducted from the grade.
\\ · A typed, double spaced outline of each speech presentation must be turned in at the time of the speech. A bibliography of sources must be attached to the outline.
\\ · Plagiarism is serious academic misconduct. Your speeches must be your own work and information used in speeches must have source citation. Any discovered plagiarism will result in a grade of 0.
\\ · Speeches will count as two test grades. Mid term and final exams as a single test grade. Test grades are weighted 60%. All other grades, even though on a 100 point scale, are weighted 40% when final grade is figured.
\\ · There will be no administrative withdrawals. Each student is responsible for his/her own withdrawal. Grades will be given on required work, not just completed work.
\ Speeches will count as two test grades. Mid term and final exams as a single test grade. Test grades are weighted 2/3. All other grades, even though on a 100 point scale, are weighted 1/3 when final grade are figured.
\ Students must be in attendance. Two absences may lower you grade one level. Do not be absent the day a speech or project is assigned.
\\ If you must be absent due to illness, you must contact the instructor. If you know in advance you will be absent, please let the instructor know.
\\ Excessive tardies will also affect your grade. Three tardies may lower your grade one level. If there are extenuating circumstances, you must let me know.
