A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.

Student Performance

  

Upon completion of the Clinical-Introduction to Community-Based Nursing course, the student will:

 Provider of Care
  1. Develop increased confidence and knowledge in providing holistic centered nursing to individuals and families along the Developmental Life Continuum within the community.
  2. Achieve confidence while developing competency and knowledge in caring for individuals and families within communities.
  3. Incorporate previous knowledge and skills in planning and providing nursing care to individuals and families to provide culturally diverse care within the community.
  4. Utilize the nursing process and critical thinking in implementing a safe plan of care based on nursing standards of practice for individuals and families along the Developmental Life Continuum.
  5. Utilize the goals of Healthy People 2010 in developing a plan of care for individuals and families within the community.
  6. Incorporate principles of teaching and learning in caring for individuals and families along the Developmental Life continuum.
  7. Identify, research and utilize community resources to meet the needs of individuals and families in a Panhandle community.
  8. Utilize skills and knowledge in implementing a health promotion/disease prevention project in a Panhandle community.
Coordinator of Care
  1. Utilize a multidisciplinary/collaborative approach to plan holistic centered care for individuals and families within the community.
  2. Utilize current technology to maintain proficiency and efficiency in planning the care of individuals and families within communities.
  3. Assume the role of the nurse in planning care for individuals and families along the Developmental Life Continuum within communities.
  4. Acquire the ability and knowledge to communicate with individuals, families and other members of the health care team.
Member of a Profession
  1. Acquire the ability and knowledge to recognize safe, legal and ethical nursing care reflecting a concern for quality of life and a respect for human value.
  2. Evaluate personal and professional growth in nursing.
  3. Improve the nursing care of individuals and families with communities through the use of research findings and the evaluation of the current practice.

Expected Student Behavior

Civility Statement: Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class. Grading Criteria

The grading scale is:

     A   90-100

     B   80-89

     C   70-79

     D   60-69

Specific course grading criteria will be discussed during the mandatory clinical orientation. 

Attendance

100% mandatory clinical attendance for course completion is required. 

Calendar

To be assigned by the instructor:       

                        Two eight (8) hour days of community nursing experience.

                        Six (6) hours for the health teaching project experience

Class calendars will be distributed the first day of class and posted on AC Online.

The class calendar will contain the deadline for the final submission of clinical assignments.
