Course Description

Overview of nursing and the role of the professional nurse as a provider of care, coordinator of care and member of a profession. Topics include knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values with a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

\ The student will identify concepts for the provision of nursing care; describe the roles of the nurse in the delivery of comprehensive care; describe the use of a systematic problem-solving process; and utilize critical thinking skills. 

\  In the role of provider of care the student will:

\ 1.  Acquire a foundation upon which to seek the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for a beginning nursing student to promote, maintain, and restore the health of patients and their families.

\ 3.  Identify components of a systematic process to develop the clinical reasoning required to provide patien-centered care.

\ 4.  Identify common psychosocial needs of patients and families.

\ 5.  Identify compassionate behaviors and acquire appropriate communication skills to care for a diverse community of patients and families.

\ 6.  Identify the basic principles of health teaching for patients and families.

\ 7.  Identify the role of community resources in meeting the needs of patients and families.

\ 8.  Demonstrate competency, safely and effectively, in the performance of basic nursing skills in a laboratory setting.

\ In the role of coordinator of care, the student will:

\ 9.  Identify the role and responsibilities of the professional nurse in providing holistic patient-centered care.

\ 10. Identify the nurmerous types of technoology the professional nurses uses in patient care.

\ 11. Identify the roll of the professional nurse in coordination of holistic patient-centered care.

\ 12. Identify appropriate communication skills for interacting with other health care team members.

\ As a member of a profession, the student will:

\ 13. Identify an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards for nursing practice.

\ 14. Identify avenues for personal and professional development in nursing practice.

\ 15. Recognize the relationship of evidence-based practice to safety and quality in patient care.

\  Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless other wise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Grading Criteria

\ The following criteria will be used to determine your grade:

\
1. \ A-90-100; B-80-89; C-70-79; D-60-69; F- below 60.
\
2. \ Average of Module Exams (4) = 75% course grade for theory
\
3. \ Final Exam = 25%.
\
4. \ EVOLVE Fundamentals Specialty exam: points will be added to the Module IV exam:  Score 70-79% = 2 points added; and 80% or greater = 4 points added.
\
5. \ Independent Learning Assignments are a course requirement and must be completed to successfully pass the class.
\
6. \ Independent Learning Assignments, Nursing Test Success, and  quizzes will not be accepted after the due date.
\
7. \ Make up exams should be taken within one week of the missed exam. 
\

\ NOTE: The student must have a combined examination grade of 69.5% or above and meet the course requirements to receive a passing final course grade.

\ Regular attendance is required for successful completion of the course. Less than 90% attendance may result in failure of the course.

Additional Information

\   Nursing test success is the hybrid part of RNSG 1209 located on AC Online, and is a key component to the success of the student.  Assignments are correlated to each module of RNSG 1209, providing strategies and practice for successful testing.
