  COURSE DESCRIPTION: Understanding purposes and processes in the visual and musical arts including evaluation of selected works. (AC Catalog, ACGM) Student Learning Outcomes are based on the required Core Curriculum Intellectual Competencies (pg. 230), Perspectives (pg. 231) and Exemplary Educational Objectives (pg. 234) as defined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Specific Course Requirements are to be found in the course schedule and course syllabus.

 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (CCIC 1,2,3,4,5,6 CCP 1,2,5,6,8 EEOHPVA 1,2,5,6,8): The following are the learning objectives of all Humanities 1301 and 1315 courses taught at Amarillo College. The emphasis of these objectives concerns the appreciation of the fine and performing arts.
1.  To demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of works in the arts and humanities.
2.  To understand those works as expressions of individual and human values within an historical and social context.
3.  To respond critically to a variety of exhibitions and performances.
4.  To engage in the creative process or interpretive performance and comprehend the physical and intellectual demands required of the author or visual or performing artist.
5.  To articulate an informed personal reaction to works in the arts and humanities.
6.  To develop an appreciation for the aesthetic principles that guide or govern the humanities and arts.
7.  To demonstrate knowledge of the influence of literature, philosophy, and/or the arts on intercultural experiences.

Expected Student Behavior

  

Classroom Rules and Expectations: All students are required to practice courteous, respectful, cooperative behavior at all times. To avoid distractions in the classroom, students will:
Arrive on time and stay until class is dismissed:
Be prepared and stay on task.

Cell phones must either be turned off or silenced during class.  Consequently, students who use their phone in ANY capacity may be asked to leave. 

E-MAIL ETIQUETTE: 

E-mails sent to your instructors must be addressed and signed.  E-mails, like all academic work, should be carefully scrutinized by their senders, as the senders’ professionalism is reflected in the grammar, spelling and structure of the e-mail.  E-mails should never look like text messages that contain slang words or heavily abbreviated terms.  E-mails that do not meet the aforementioned criteria will not be answered.

If during the semester you consider dropping, please check with me first for an alternate plan, one that protects your investment in the course and gives you an opportunity to complete it.  Remember that the deadline for drops this semester is November 16, 2011.

 

Grading Criteria

\  Academic Honesty:All matters of academic dishonesty including plagiarism, collusion, fabrication, cheating etc. will result in a failing grade for the assignment in question. All violations will be forwarded to the proper college authorities for review. Any form of disruptive behavior will not be toleratedAny material copied and pasted from a web source into assignments, analyses, and essays without proper citation or documentation will be considered plagiarism or stealing and will receive a failing grade.

\ Grading Criteria: It is the student’s responsibility to complete all assigned tasks by the specified due date. Individual assignments are evaluated by the instructor. Students are expected to complete all requirements with no less than 75% accuracy. Incomplete assignments, analyses, participation attendance concerns will be reported to specific department chairs, division chairs, and Associate Vice President of Instruction.

\  Course Requirements:Students will complete all assignments in MLA format unless specified by the instructor. E-mailed assignments will not be accepted unless specified by the instructor.

\

\  1. Assignments and Analyses – worth 50%
\ Students will memorize terms and definitions from the textbook and from lectures.
\ Students will research the terms and methods from the textbook and from lectures.
\ Students will research and analyze various topics relating to the chapters.
\ Students will attend at least one cultural event outside of the classroom and submit a required analysis.

\ 2. Discussion Forums – worth 25%

\

\ Students will read material, choose appropriate images or watch visual examples.
\ Students will write analytical responses.
\ Students will post responses into a Discussion Forum or in a Perception Key Drop Box.
\ Students will reply to classmates’ posts.

\ 3. Presentation Power-point – worth 10%

\

\ Students will choose a topic from a provided list.
\ Students will choose a date to present their chosen topic.
\ Students will research topic following the Presentation Guidelines.
\ Students will present topic in a power-point format to the class.
\ Students will type, print, and submit to the instructor at the time of Presentation in MLA format a Bibliography, Works Cited, Image Citation, and Audio or Film Citation.
\ Students will not be allowed to present their topic after their assigned date.

\  4. Final Exam – worth 15%

\

\ The Final Exam will include a section for vocabulary, methods, and visual analysis. Analysis on specific works and a visual selection may be included. The exam will take the entire class session.

\

\  5. Extra Credit - Attendance Grade

\

\ The Attendance Grade will be used as an extra-credit grade.
\ The Attendance Grade will be included into the Assignment Grade Average on the last day of class, not including the Final Exam date.
\ The lowest Attendance Grade possible will be 60 with the following exceptions:
\ Exception One:  Students who do not attend the day of the Final Exam will forfeit the Attendance Grade and receive a zero.
\ Exception Two: Students who are absent more than eight class meetings will forfeit the Attendance Grade and receive a zero.

Attendance

  

Regular attendance is required and is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class and to complete all assignments.  Three or more absences in a class will be considered excessive and could contribute to a failing grade. It is imperative that you communicate with me when an emergency arises.   If you must stop attending, withdraw officially by the deadline; otherwise, I must record an F for the semester.  Students with no absences will receive additional points at the end of the semester.

As a hybrid course, students must particpate in dicussion board assignments through AC Online.  Quizzes, assignments, and course announcements are updated weekly through AC Online.

The student is responsible for obtaining and completing all work and assignments missed as a result of an excused absence.
