Course Description

Study of issues that impact addiction counseling. Special populations, dual diagnosis, ethics, gambling and infectious diseases associated with addiction counseling will be investigated.

Scantrons, pens, paper, pencils. Other supplies needs will be discussed in class.

Student Performance

By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the learning objectives with a minimum of 70 percent competency level based on completion of 4 tests and a final exam administered under the supervision of the professor.

After studying and orally presenting the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:

1. List the characteristics of codependency.
2. Discuss counseling goals for the codependent.
3. Discuss treatment of chemically dependent offenders in correctional settings.
4. Discuss the current diagnosis for gambling addiction.
5. List characteristics of gambling addition.
6. Discuss counseling goals for compulsive gamblers.
7. HIV/AIDS and the substance abusing client.
8. What are ethical principles?
9. Rights of patients
10. Confidentiality
11. Discuss goals of the elderly drug abuser

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to follow all Amarillo College policies and procedures.  In addition:

1.  Arrive on time and stay for the whole class period.

2.  Make sure cell phones are turned OFF before entering the classroom!  No texting in the classroom.  You will be asked to leave if your cell phone disrupts the class.  You can leave your cell phone on vibration mode with professor's permission.  DO NOT LEAVE AND RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM IN ORDER TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE!  IT IS DISRUPTIVE AND RUDE!

PLEASE NOTE:  If you leave the classroom to answer your phone, you will not be allowed back in the class for the day.

Grading Criteria

The grade in the course will be determined by the results in four areas: 1) Three tests (50%)
2) Class participation (10%) 3) Presentation and Articles (40 %)

The grading schedule is as follows:
A = 90=100
B = 80 to 89
C = 70 to 79
D = 60 to 69
F = 59-0

 

 

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential to the successful completion of the course. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP A COURSE OR WITHDRAW FROM COLLEGE. Your instructor can not do this for you. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of "F". The last day to withdraw from class is April 19, 2012.
