Course Description

An introduction to the family as a dynamic system focusing on the effects of addiction pertaining to family roles, rules and behavior patterns. Discuss the impact of mood altering substances and behaviors and therapeutic alternatives as they relate to the family from a multicultural and transgenerational perspective.

Student Performance

\ By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed learning objectives with a minimum of 70 percent competency level based on the completion of a mid-semester and final written exam administered under the supervision of the professor.

\ After studying the materials presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:
\ 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the definition of addiction.
\ 2. List the etiological theories of substance abuse.
\ 3. Discuss various treatment approaches to substance abuse.
\ 4. Define nuclear and extended family.
\ 5. List the physiological, sociological, and psychological theory of etiology and the family.
\ 6. Demonstrate an understanding of the family genogram.
\ 7. Discuss an overview of treatment techniques for family therapy.

Expected Student Behavior

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:
 

1.  Arrive to class on time and stay for the whole class period.

2. Make sure cell phones are turned OFF before entering the classroom!   No texting in the classroom.  You will be asked to leave if your cell phone disrupts the class. You can leave your cell phone on vibration mode with professor's permission.  DO NOT LEAVE AND RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM IN ORDER TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE!  IT IS DISRUPTIVE AND RUDE! 

PLEASE NOTE:  If you leave the classroom to answer your phone, you will not be allowed back in the class for the day.


 

Grading Criteria

The grade in the lecture course will be determined by the results in three areas: (1) three tests (60%),
(2) class participation (20%), and (3) genogram (20%).

A = 90 to 100
B = 80 to 89
C = 70 to 79
D = 60 to 69
F = Below 60

All papers and homework will need to be done using a word processing program, preferably MS Word. 

There is no extra credit work available for this class.

Makeup Policy:

There will be one makeup day per semester.  Only one exam is allowed to be taken on this day.  Makeups for this class will be May 3rd.  Times for the makeup will be announced in class.  You cannot makeup the final exam.

*The last day to withdraw or drop a class/change from credit to audit is April 19, 2012. 
Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have with your progress in this course with the instructor.

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is essential to the successful completion of the course. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP A COURSE OR WITHDRAW FROM COLLEGE. Your instructor can not do this for you. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”.

Additional Information

This course will provide knowledge concerning:

a. theories of substance abuse.
b. treatment approaches to substance abuse
c. viewing the family as client
d. various influences on the family
e. diagnosis of the family
f. a prescription for family treatment

GENOGRAM PROJECT:

The student is expected to do a family genogram.  The format will be handed out in class.  The genogram is to be a minimum of three generations.  If you were adopted, use the adoptive family tree. 

This project will be done on a poster board.  It is due April 19, 2011.
