Course Description

Course is designed to facilitate development of the basic communication skills necessary to develop an effective helping relationship with clients. Includes the utilization of special skills to assist individuals, families or groups in achieving objectives through exploration of a problem and its ramifications; examination of attitudes and feelings; considering of alternative solutions; and decision making.

Student Performance

After studying the materials presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:
1.         Define counseling
2.         List goals of counseling
3.         Give a composite model of human effectiveness
4.         List and demonstrate the therapeutic traits of a counselor
5.         Discuss the initial procedures of the counseling process
6.         List and discuss the factors surrounding the initial counseling interview.
7.         Discuss how to survive a substance abuse counseling agency.

Expected Student Behavior

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:
 

1.  Arrive to class on time and stay for the whole class period.

2. Make sure cell phones are turned OFF before entering the classroom!   No texting in the classroom.  You will be asked to leave if your cell phone disrupts the class. You can leave your cell phone on vibration mode with professor's permission.  DO NOT LEAVE AND RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM IN ORDER TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE!  IT IS DISRUPTIVE AND RUDE! 

PLEASE NOTE:  If you leave the classroom to answer your phone, you will not be allowed back in the class for the day.

Grading Criteria

The grade in the lecture course will be determined by the results in three areas: (1) 3 tests - 50%,
(2) demonstration of therapeutic traits – 25%, (3) final exam – 25%.
 
            A = 90 to 100
            B = 80 to 89
            C = 70 to 79
            D = 60 to 69
            F = Below 60
 
            *The last day to withdraw or to drop a class/change from credit to audit is April 19, 2012.
            Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have with your progress in this course with the  instructor.

 

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential to the successful completion of the course. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP A COURSE OR WITHDRAW FROM COLLEGE. Your instructor can not do this for you. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a performance grade, usually a grade of “F”.
