Prerequisites

Course Description

A study of the child, family, community and schools, including parent education and involvement, family and community lifestyles, child abuse and current family life issues. Students will participate in field experience with children from infancy through age 12 in a variety of settings with varied and diverse populations.

\ Pens, paper, pencils.  Access to a computer with reliable internet and printer.  Other supplies as needed.

Student Performance

1.     Examine literature on parenting styles and effective parenting techniques.

2.    Discuss issues relating to families and communities and literature relating to diverse cultures and lifestyles.

3.    Summarize ways to communicate and interact with parents and families.

4.    Recognize signs of abuse and neglect and describe ways to work effectively with abused and neglected children, families, and community professionals.

\ Students are expected to attend all campus meetings.  In addition, assignments will be issued online.  It is the student's responsibility to log into the class site and complete assignments by their due date.

Additional Information

To satisfactorily complete this course the student will:

  1. Read the assigned chapters in the textbook and view any media assigned with each chapter or section in the text.
  2. Participate by completing and posting discussions, case studies, or journal assignments on a weekly basis by the deadline dates.
  3. Satisfactorily complete five exams on scheduled dates.
  4. Complete and submit Observation Experience Journal and Log Sheet by  Thursday,  April 5, 2012.

COMPLETION AND VERIFICATION OF A 16 HOUR OBSERVATION EXPERIENCE AND COMPLETED JOURNAL AND LOG SHEET IS MANDATORY IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THIS COURSE.  Observations must be completed by Thursday, April 5, 2012.

  1. Complete a criminal history form, affidavit form (notarized), and a $2 money order.  Make the money order payable to the TX Department of Family & Protective Services (TDFPS).  All students must have a clear criminal history on file with Amarillo College in order to begin observation hours.  I will notify you as soon as we get a clear record back from the State. 

·         Bring the following items to the AC Child Development Lab School by January  24:  

               1) $2 money order payable to TDFPS; 2) completed criminal history form; and 3) notarized affidavit. 

·         Note:  If you have resided outside of the state of Texas within the last five years, you will need to complete

               a finger print test.

·         If you have completed a tour and a criminal history in another TECA course here at AC, send me an email

               indicating which course and semester you completed the criminal history and one hour tour.

  • If for some reason you are unable to complete this course, be sure to notify the instructor and the Registrar’s office before April 19, 2012, which is the last day to drop a class.
  • MAKE UP EXAMS ARE UP TO THE INSTRUCTOR'S DISCRETION.  PLEASE MAKE A STRONG EFFORT TO COMPLETE ALL EXAMS BY THE DEADLINE DATE AND TIME.
  • TIME MANAGEMENT IS AN IMPORTANT SKILL.  COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS  EARLY EACH WEEK AND LATE WORK WILL NOT BE AN ISSUE.
