A continuation of shorthand/notetaking principles with advanced mastery of accurate reading and writing of notes to produce mailable documents from dictation.

  1. At least two shorthand notebooks (one for homework; one for class drills)
  2. At least two pens (no pencils; be sure they are comfortable for you to use)
  3. Textbook - Instructor will distribute textbooks at first meeting.<

    Student Performance

    The student will read notes at an acceptable minimum speed; take dictation at minimum speed of 70 words per minute on new material; transcribe notes with 95 percent accuracy; and produce mailable documents from dictation.

    The student will be able to complete satisfactorily all of the listed Performance Learning Objectives with a competency level based on the completion of required examinations administered under the supervision of the instructor and evaluated according to the instructors grading scale.

    1. Write accurately, spell correctly, and read rapidly designated office-style speedwriting notes with a minimum of 95 percent accuracy. *(C1,C7,C15,C16,C19,F1,F6,F9,F12)
    2. Write office style dictation from designated material (previewed and unpreviewed)with a minimum of 95 percent accuracy.*(C1,C5,C7,F1,F2, F7,F8,F10,F12)
    3. Transcribe office-style dictated speedwriting notes into mailable format within a time limit of 30 minutes. *(C1,C5,C7,F1,F2,F7,F8,F10,F12)

      *(Refers to the SCANS-the Secretary Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The SCANS will be explained by your instructor at the first class meeting.)

    Grading Criteria

    GRADING SCALE:

    The final product of Office Style Dictation/Transcription should be in mailable format. That means no errors in format or in content.

     80%-Office Style Dictation/Transcription
      20%-Homework
    100%-Final Course Grade

    Office Style Dictation/Transcription in mailable format at 80 WPM:
     A = 6 mailable Office-Style Dictation/Transcriptions
     B = 4 mailable Office-Style Dictation/Transcriptions
     C = 2 mailable Office-Style Dictation/Transcriptions
     D = 1 mailable Office=Style Dictation/Transcriptions
