Prerequisites

RDNG 0321-minium grade of C, Accuplacer reading score of 61-77, THEA reading score of 201-229 or equivalent score on a state approved test

Course Description

Improve reading proficiency, reading speed, comprehension, vocabulary and general study skills. Develop skills necessary for reading college-level textbooks. Exit test required for satisfactory completion.

Student Performance

\ To prepare the student to comprehend reading material presented in college level textbooks.  At the conclusion of the course, the student must demonstrate mastery of the following skills at 70%: 

\

\ 1.  Determine the meanings of words and phrases.

\

\ 2.  Determine the main idea and supporting details in written material.

\

\ 3.  Identify a writer's purpose, point of view, and intended meaning.

\

\ 4.  Analyze the relationship among ideas in written material.

\

\ 5.  Use critical reasoning skills to evaluate written material.

\

\ 6.  Apply study skills to reading assignments in college textbooks.

  1. \ Online discussions and e-mail are integral parts of the course.  All discussion submissions and e-mail must be polite and free from vulgar language or profanity.  Please use correct grammar and complete sentences.

  3. \ Any type of cheating or academic dishonesty is prohibited.  The “Student Rights and Responsibilities” publication outlines the definition of academic dishonesty and the associated penalties.

  5. \ When a student is logged into a computer for the purpose of accumulating lab hours required for a reading class, the student must be actively involved in the lesson at all times. Any attempt by a student to obtain computer lab hours dishonestly will result in the student’s lab hours being reduced to zero (0). The student will have to repeat all lab hours.

\ REQUIRED HOMEWORK:

\ As part of the course requirements of Reading 0331, assigned homework must be completed each week.  Students will complete the homework assignments in their textbook and then submit their homework via AC Online.  In addition, there will be online assignments that will be due each week that are not in the textbook.

\ REQUIRED LAB

\

\ As part of the course requirements of Reading 0331, assigned lab hours must be completed each week.  Lab grades will be given based on completion of the required hours and/or performance.  Lab assignments will include Weaver Wise computer lessons, tutoring, or other activities approved by your instructor.  Completion of weekly lab hours with adequate performance will result in a grade of 100.  Failure to meet this requirement will result in a grade of zero (0).  Students may use the computers in LIB 012A or on the second floor of the Lynn Library to complete their lessons.  Students may also access their computer lessons via the Internet at home or at any public library.

\ MAKE-UP POLICY:

\ Tests  

\

\ Due dates for tests are indicated in the course.  Any test not completed on time will receive a grade of zero (0) unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.  The highest score a student will be able to earn on a makeup exam is "85."

\ Homework

\

\ Homework will not be taken late.  Any homework not completed on time will receive a grade of zero (0). The homework assignment must be received the day it is due to receive credit.

\

\ Lab Assignments

\

\ All lab assignments are due on assigned days at the assigned times.  Any lab not completed on time will receive a grade of zero (0).

Attendance

\ Regular "attendance" is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Submitting designated assignments on the due date indicates regular attendance.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to submit assignments on time.  It will be the responsibility of the student to drop the class by the withdrawal date should he/she stop attending; otherwise, a grade of "F" will be given.  A student who has turned in assignments on time and has an average of "70" or above will be exempt from the final exam.

\ Tutoring, led by a Learning Specialist, will be available throughout the fall and spring semesters.  Tutoring may be used in place of lab.  Call 371-5458 or drop by LIB 012A to make an appointment.

\ A student may take the ACCUPLACER Test or the THEA Test anytime during the semester.  If he/she passes the reading portion of either test, the student should immediately visit with the instructor to discuss options available to the student at that time.
