Course Description

Investigation of a variety of media, techniques and subjects. Exploration of perceptual and descriptive possibilities with consideration of drawing as a developmental process as well as an end in itself. Regular outside assignments.

ARTS 1316 Drawing I

Investigation of drawing media and techniques including descriptive and expressive possibilities.

Specific Course Outcomes:

Students will

·         Gain familiarity with drawing terminology

·         Work with a variety of drawing tools

·         Be able to apply the Principles of Design to their drawings

·         Apply a variety of techniques in drawing

·         Solve visual problems and create dynamic compositions

·         Utilize techniques emphasizing accurate, expressive, and conceptual approaches.

·         Discuss their work in verbal and/or written form

·         Present work for grading in a professional manner, as directed by the instructor

·         Maintain a professional and respectful attitude

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are required to follow the "Golden Rule".  (If you do not know this rule, please note that kindergarten is a pre-requisite before taking this class.)

\ Those with no conscience please follow this:

\ Any student behavior that detracts from or disrupts classroom conditions, including (but not limited to) misbehavior, loud talking other than discussions, use of cell phones, cameras, pagers, headphones, etc. will result in a grade reduction, suspension or dismissal.  See student publication "Student Rights and Responsibilities" for details.

Grading Criteria

\ • ASSIGNMENTS (Studio & Homework)
\     Assignments will be given each week and upon completion all work will be presented for in-class critiques.  Assignments will be graded following the critique.  If a student feels that his or her work could be improved after hearing the advice given in critique, he or she has the option of reworking their composition and presenting it again for critique, thus, improving their grade.  All work must be reworked and presented no later than the last group critique.  Absences on the day of a critique, will result in a grade no higher than a “C.”  Please have your work at critique.

\ • PORTFOLIO
\     Please keep all your work in chronological order in your portfolio.  All drawings should be signed and dated.  Portfolios will be reviewed at mid-term and at the end of the semester.

\  • CLASS PARTICIPATION
\     Participation in group critiques and class discussions is mandatory and an essential part of this course.

\ • ATTENDANCE
\     My policy is as follows:
\         YOU MUST COME TO CLASS!
\             You may have 3 absences (which better involve blood/gore) before your grade drops one number each absence.
\         YOU MUST BE ON TIME!
\             If you are more than 10 minutes late don't come, you will be marked absent.  Each time you are late, it counts as half an absence.
\         IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO ATTEND CLASS!
\             Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement

\ You may have 3 absences with my approval.  Your grade will be negatively effected after each unexcused absence.
