Expected Student Behavior

In accordance with the policy of the Mathematics and Engineering Department of Amarillo College and by the discretion of the instructor, only drinks are allowed in the classroom. NO FOOD is allowed. NO FOOD or DRINK is allowed in the Learning Center.

It is also the policy of the department that cell phones and pagers be turned off or in silent mode during class or in the Learning Center.

Cheating of any sort will not be tolerated and will result in a grade of zero (0) on the exam or homework in question and may not be dropped. Students are expected to behave in all college buildings in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. Behaviors that are not supportive include, but are not limited to:

Tardiness/leaving early; talking during lecture; doing homework or other projects during class; use of cell phone for an reason; abusive, offensive, or disrespectful language or demeanor toward AC faculty, staff, fellow students, and/or property.

Each course has curriculum coverage requirements, and instructors must set the pace of the course to ensure that these requirements are met. Complaining about pace will not result in less material being covered. Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in this syllabus and/or with AC’s “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to:

removal from the classroom; consultation with the department chair or other AC authority; withdrawal from the course and/or the college.
Grading Criteria
DROPPING THE COURSE: Deadline for dropping this course is APRIL 19, 2012. Until the course is officially dropped, absences and missing work will continue to be graded. Any grade below 60 and dropped after this deadline will result in a recorded F in the course.
NOTE: All assignments (homework, quizzes, exams) are posted on the AC ONLINE Calendar THE DAY THEY ARE DUE!!!
HOMEWORK: Homework is assigned on the Class Assignment Sheet and/or AC ONLINE (ACOL) Calendar. All homework must be solved completely with all steps shown, working down the column, and the final answer circled. Loose leaf paper, at most 2 columns, problems ordered down the columns, and pencil must be used with the prescribed heading and on the outside and the Name on each page.

Assignment
All or a portion of the problems will be checked, as well as completion of the assignment, to determine the grade. Illegible work will be counted as incorrect. No late homework will be accepted. The final Homework Average will be determined by: total correct problems/total assigned problems.
QUIZZES: Short quizzes will be given throughout the semester at the beginning of class. Tardiness to the class will result in a missed quiz. No late quizzes will be accepted. They are scheduled on the ACOL Calendar, but additional quizzes may be given if the instructor determines the need.
EXAMS: Exams are scheduled on the Class Assignment Sheet and/or ACOL Calendar. There will be four major Exams and a comprehensive FINAL Exam. Exams may be made up BEFORE an absence or by special appointment made with the instructor BEFORE the absence, or a "0" will be recorded. This “0” will be replaced by the FINAL exam grade. Only one missed exam can be replaced with the FINAL exam grade; all others will be a “0”. THE FINAL EXAM MUST BE TAKEN ON THE ASSIGNED DATE.

Students will attend three hours of lecture per week and will need approximately 2 hours of outside work for every one hour spent in class. Homework will be assigned at the end of each chapter unit. Students are expected to complete these assigned problems and turn them in at the beginning of the next class period.

Practice is essential and much emphasis is placed on accurately completing the homework and reviews. Class attendance and participation is expected and emphasized as a key component to success in the class. Questions need to be addressed promptly so as not to fall behind on classroom instruction.

Class attendance is essential. In the event of an absence it will be the student’s responsibility to:
