Prerequisites

Course Description

Development of expressive and receptive skills in fingerspelling and numbers. Receptive skills focus on whole word phrase recognition and fingerspelling/number comprehension in context. Expressive skills focus on the development of speech clarity and fluency.

Student Performance

Learning Outcome 1:  The student will demonstrate an understanding of fingerspelling theories and concepts with a minimum of 70% accuracy.

 

Performance objectives for this outcome:

  1. The student will identify the different uses of fingerspelling.
  2. The student will demonstrate performing warm-up exercises to relax muscles and prevent stress to the hands, wrists and arms.
  3. The student will demonstrate the understanding for reading syllables and words rather than individual letters.
  4. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the ability to broaden their focus, centering on the lower face, utilizing peripheral vision to allow for input from non-manual markers, speech-reading techniques, and speaker affect as well as from the fingerspelling.
  5. The student will demonstrate the ability to concentrate on the context in which the fingerspelled word is contained as reinforcement to reading fingerspelling.
  6. The student will demonstrate an understanding of incorporating contextual clues to aid in closure when letters or words are missed or not clearly fingerspelled.
  7. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the principles of lexicalized fingerspelling.  The student ill demonstrate an appropriate understanding of terminology associated with fingerspelling.

Method of Measurement:  Instructor observation, written assessment, class discussion, and evaluation of videotaped performance.

 

Learning Outcome 2:  The student will demonstrate an understanding of Numbering theories and concepts with a minimum of 70% accuracy.

 

2.01 The student will identify the different uses of numbering conventions in American Sign Language.

2.02  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of cardinal numbers.

2.03  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of ordinal numbers.

2.04  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories of time concepts/when numbers,

2.05  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of  age numbers.

 2.06  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of measurement numbers.

2.07  The students will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of duration numbers.

2.08  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of money/financial numbers.

2.09  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of informational numbers.

2.10  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of scientific numbers.

2.11  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories and concepts of sports numbers.

2.12  The student will demonstrate an understanding of appropriate terminology associated with numbering conventions.

 

Method of Measurement:  Instructor observation, written assessment, class discussion, evaluation of taped performance.

 

Learning Outcome 3:  The student will demonstrate the ability to comprehend information presented in American Sign Language Fingerspelling and Numbering Conventions with a minimum of 70% accuracy.

 

Performance objectives for this outcome:

  1. The student will demonstrate the ability for reading syllables and words rather than individual letters.
  2. The student will demonstrate the ability to incorporate contextual clues to aid in closure when letters or words are missed or not clearly fingerspelled.
  3. The student will recognize and identify lexicalized fingerspelling by the patterns they form.
  4. The student will recognize and identify numbering conventions as executed by others.
  5. The student will recognize and identify numbering articulation methods as executed by others.
  6. The student will identify common acronyms.
  7. The student will identify acronyms related to the Deaf community.
  8. The student will recognize and identify commonly used fingerspelled words.

 

Method of Measurement:  Instructor observation, written assessment, class discussion, evaluation of videotaped performance.

 

Learning Outcome 4:  The student will demonstrate the ability to express information into American Sign Language Fingerspelling and Numbering Conventions with 70% accuracy.

 

Performance objectives for this outcome:

  1. The student will demonstrate the appropriate hand, arm and wrist position for clear fingerspelling.
  2. The student will demonstrate the ability to simultaneously, without voice, mouth fingerspelled words.
  3. The student will demonstrate the ability to correctly form each letter of the alphabet.
  4. The student will demonstrate the ability to move from one letter to the next in a rhythmic fashion without extraneous movements.
  5. The student will demonstrate the appropriate phrasing in fingerspelling.
  6. The student will demonstrate the ability to correctly execute commonly used lexicalized fingerspelled vocabulary.
  7. The student will demonstrate the appropriate execution of numbering conventions, cardinal, ordinal, money/financial, measurements, duration, time/when, age sports informational, and scientific.
  8. The student will demonstrate appropriate execution of numbering conventions incorporating position and distributive aspects.
  9. The student will demonstrate appropriate execution of commonly used fingerspelled words including: proper nouns, states, capitals, countries and months of the year.
