Course Description

A detailed study of the human organism according to levels of chemical and structural organization with special reference to cytology, histology, and organs of the sense organs, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive systems and genetics.

1.  Describe each endocrine gland and its hormones including actions, regulation, and disorders.

2.  Define the principal physical characteristics of blood and its functions in the body.

3.  Identify and describe the structure of the heart and the functions of each part to include the flow of blood through the heart and the body.

4.  Describe the principal events of the cardiac cycle and cardiac output.

5.  Contrast the structure and function of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and  veins.

6.  Identify and describe the functions and components of the lymphatic system.

7.  Identify and describe the structure and functions of the organs of the respiratory system, including the events involved in inspiration and                    expiration.

8.  Identify and describe the structure and function of the digestive system, and distinguish between the chemical and mechanical phases.

9.  Identify and describe the structure and functions of the organs of the urinary system.

10.  Describe the process of urine formation, its physical characteristics, and normal chemical components.

11.  Identify and describe the structure, histology, and functions of the organs of the reproductive system.

12.  Explain and describe the events associate with pregnancy.

\ If a student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Math, Science, and Engineering Chairperson (Dr. Kathy Wetzel), the Associate Vice-President for Instruction (Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart), then the college President, (Dr. Paul Matney), IN THAT ORDER; PLEASE!!!

Grading Criteria

\ TESTING and GRADING FOR THE SEMESTER:

\

\ The total grade will be based upon both lecture and lab scores. Students must have a combined score of 60% or higher from lecture and lab portions for a passing grade.

\

\ LECTURE GRADING:

\

\      50% of the lecture grade for the semester will consist of the following

\

\           1.  major exams

\

\                a. at least 4 major exams.

\

\                b.  lowest exam grade will be dropped.

\

\           2.  lecture quizzes

\

\                a.  quiz average will be equal to one major exam grade.

\

\                b.  pop quizzes may be given.

\

\                c. lecture quizzes may be given during the lab period.

\

\                d.  lowest quiz grade will be dropped. 

\

\      There WILL BE NO makeup examsor quizzes given. The first missed exam or quiz will be dropped automatically. A student will have to miss class either for an emergency or non-emergency (this includes, but is not limited to: illness of you, friend, family member; court appearances; delay on way to school; weddings; etc.), in either case, the student is encouraged to save the drop grade for that incident.

\

\      CRITICAL NOTE: If a student receives a grade of ZERO for cheating or the appearance of cheating, that grade WILL NOT be dropped.  The HIGHEST grade for a quiz or an exam will be dropped.

\ LABORATORY GRADING:

\

\      25% of the lab grade for the semester will consist of the following

\

\           1.  lab practicals (60%)

\

\           2.  lab quizzes (40%)

\

\      Note: The lowest lab quiz will be dropped.

\

\      CRITICAL NOTE: If a student receives a grade of ZERO for cheating or the appearance of cheating, that grade WILL NOT be dropped.  The HIGHEST grade for a quiz or an exam will be dropped.

\  LECTURE FINAL EXAM:

\

\      25% of the lecture grade (not counted above) for the semester will consist of the following

\

\           1. Comprehensive final exam

\

\  GRADING:

\

\      Grades WILL NOT BE CURVED and there will be NO EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS

\

\           A= 100-89

\

\           B= 88-79

\

\           C= 78-69

\

\           D= 68-59

\

\           F= 58 or less

Attendance

 

 

Attendance is not mandatory, however, regular attendance is recommended for satisfactory acheivement. Therefore, it is the SOLE responsibility of the student to attend class. Attendance will be taken until the census day, February 1st, after that date attendance may not be taken.

 

A grade of W will be given for a student who drops or withdraws from the course on or before __April 19th__  You may NOT drop or withdraw from the course after __April 19th__ without the permission of the Biology Department. You must petition the Biology Department.

FOOD & DRINK:

     You may bring food & drink into the lecture room, however, if you spill something please clean up after yourself. Food & drinks are allowed in the               lab room, however there may be some inappropriate times for not bringing such items.

CELL PHONES:

     Cell phones are not prohibited, however please be considerate of others. Please keep all cell phones on silent or vibrate mode. If it is necessary that you answer the call please step outside the classroom to complete the call. Absolutely no calls shall be taken during a quiz, exam, or lab practical. Answering the phone during such times will result in a grade of zero for that quiz, exam, or lab practical.

BIOLOGY STUDY CENTER:

     The biology study center is located in room 110 of Warren Hall. The hours are posted outside the study center & other classrooms. When using the study center, please be sure that you sign in & sign out at the entrance.

     Note: The study center is a priviledge and not a requirement by the biology department. SO....

          1.  PLEASE silence your cell phones or place them in vibrate mode.

          2.  PLEASE do not talk on your cell phone in the study center. Step outside the room.

          3.  PLEASE do not go to the study center to "hang out". Students are trying to study.

          4. PLEASE follow any "common sense" rules or other rules posted in the study center.

          5.  PLEASE handle the models and equipment with care. They are very expensive and hard to replace.

Bad Weather:

    In the event that the campus is closed because of inclement weather, the quiz, exam or lab practical scheduled on the day that the campus was closed will be taken on the next opening day of class.

If class is cancelled because I am ill, see bad weather procedure.
