A continuation of biological concepts and how they relate to the individual, the community and the world. Emphasis is placed on ecology, behavior, human biology and evolution.

Optional -  Course notes will be provided in the course however some students feel that a textbook is helpful.  The following book is the adopted book for the class:

Biology, Hoefnagels, 1st edition

Computer with internet capabilities. Free downloads such as Shockwave, Adobe, QuickTime, etc may be required to access some assignments.

1. Describe the basic body tissues, organs, and systems.
2. Describe the basic principles of inheritance.
3. Describe the diversity of the lower animals
6. Describe the diversity of the higher animals

6. Discuss the animalbody and its coverings.
7. Discuss the concept of animal support and locomotion.
8. Describe the idea of gas exchange and internal transport.
9. Discuss animal responsivness and sensation.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF THE COURSE: By the end of the semester the student will have satisfactorily completed all listed learning objectives with a minimum of 60% competency level based on the completion of all major exams.

Grading Criteria

 

 Evaluation: The final grades of A (89.5-1), B (79.5-89.4), C (69.5-79.4), and D (59.5-69.4), and F ( below 59.5) will be computed as the average of the earned grades from:

  • Four major examinations will be given during the semester. The lowest of these exam grades will be a drop grade if a final exam is taken. If a final exam is not taken then the final becomes the drop grade. The final comprehensive examination is optional and at the discretion of the student. If the student is satisfied with his/her grade prior to the administration of the final then the student may op not to take the final.
  • Quizzes will be given weekly. More than one quiz will be taken per week in the summer. All quizes will be averaged and counted as an additional test grade. The lowest grade will be dropped.
Test grades as described above will comprise 40% of the final grade. The additional 60%will be comprised of assignments (counting as 25%), Quizzes (Counting as 25%), and discussions (counting as 10%).
 
 
 

NO MAKEUP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN.

Four exams plus a final are scheduled for the semester.  The lowest of these exam grades will be dropped if the final is taken.  If the final is not taken then the final becomes the drop grade.  Quizzes will also be given weekly.  The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
