Prerequisites: RNSG 1209 and RNSG 1105

Course Description

Development of skills and techniques required for a comprehensive health assessment within a legal/ethical framework. Includes adult head-to-toe assessment and interviewing techniques. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

Students must have some basic computer knowledge and access to a computer with internet access.

Student Performance

The student will describe the components of a comprehensive health assessment and demonstrate the techniques utilized in a systematic process on the adult patient.

Upon completion of the Health Assessment course, the student will:

MEMBER OF THE PROFESSION:

1. Discuss the ethical-legal framework of assessing the adult patient in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health.

2. Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning when performing the health assessment of the adult patient.

3. Identify activities that promote the development and practice of professional nursing integral to health assessment of the adult patient.

PROVIDER OF PATIENT-CENTERED CARE :

4. Develop assessment skills in order to assist the adult patient in the promotion, maintenance, and restroration of health.

5. Utilize a systematic process and cinical reasoning when perfoeming the health assessment of an adult patient.

6. Explain nursing concepts specific to meeting unique paychosocial and spiritual needs when assessing the adult patient.

7. Demonstrate the principles of health teaching during the assessment of the adult patient.

8. Identify basic nursing and advanced nursing during the assessment of the adult patient.

9. Discuss compassionate behaviors and appropriate communication skills used in the assessment of the adult patient.

10. Identify community rescources to meet the needs of the adult patient related to their assessment.

 

PATIENT SAFETY ADVOCATE:

11. Analyze evidence-based practice data with patient-centered data which pertains to the assessment of the adult patient.

12. Identify governmental and organizational requirements and professional standards to promote and ensure patient safety in relation to health assessment of the adult patient.

MEMBER OF THE HEALTHCARE TEAM:

13. Describe strategies to effectively work with otther disciplines in the comprehensive health assessment of the adult patient.

14. Discuss effective communication skills with other healthcare team members in relation to health assessment data.

15. Discuss the application of technology in the efficient management of health assessment data.

16. Idetify the professional role of the nurse within the healthcare team related to adult health assessment.

Grading Criteria

A = 90 - 100, B = 80 - 89, C = 75 - 79, D = 60 - 69, F = below 60  

30% of the course grade is from the health assesement head-to-toe examination 

10% of the course grade is from the health assessment simulation examination

25% of the course grade is from the comprehensive computer examination

20% of the course grade is from the seven case studies

5% of the course grade is from the evolve exam

10% of the grade is from class participation, case studies, and team participation

 

Within one week of the scheduled exam.

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Students muct attend 90% of classroom meetings. The student should be on time, so three tardies will equal one missed day. 

Calendar

1 specialty evolve exam and 1 computer exam

All students must access the on-line remediation through HESI Assessment after the course’s Evolve Specialty or Custom Exam. All students will develop an individualized study packet, and review all areas designated as needing improvement. Completion of remediation and development of a study packet is due by the Friday before the final exam. If it is not completed as assigned, then the student will fail the course because of a failure to complete this requirement.

Module II: Assessment of the Skin, Hair, Nails; Assessment of the Eyes, Nose, and Throat; Assessment of the Thyroid Gland; Assessment of the Lymphatic System 

Module III: Assessment of the Cardiovascular System and Peripheral Vascular System; Assessment of the Respiratory System; Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System 

Module IV: Assessment of the Neurological System; Assessment of the Genitourinary System; Assessment of the Musculoskeletal System.
