PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all the listed learning objectives with a minimum of 70 percent competency level based on the completion of a minimum of Four (4) major exams and a comprehensive post examination not to exceed two hours. These will be administered under the supervision of the instructor.

PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES (MINIMUM COMPETENCIES):

Subject Description: This outline is a survey of the basic principles of chemistry as they relate to funeral service. Especially stressed are the chemical principles and precautions involved in sanitation, disinfection, pubic health, and embalming practice. The government regulation of chemicals currently used in funeral service is reviewed.

Objectives: Upon satisfactory completion of a course in chemistry the student should be able to:
\

1.                  Explain selected facts of general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and embalming chemistry;
\
2.                  Identify the characteristics of solutions, colloids, suspensions, and the processes of diffusions and osmosis;
\
3.                  Explain the essential characteristics of autolysis, hydrolysis, fermentation, and putrefaction in the area of the chemistry of decomposition;
\
4.                  Define organic chemistry and describe the characteristics of organic compounds as they relate to embalming chemistry;
\
5.                  Compare and contrast the essential characteristics of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins;
\
6.                  Differentiate among the representative chemicals in embalming fluid (arterial, cavity, and accessory) and describe their respective functions;
\
7.                  Identify and list the potentially harmful chemicals used in the preparation room, and their regulations.

  1. If you desire to utilize micro-cassette recorders, you must obtain permission from the instuctor.

  3. Unnecessary class room disruptions (including pagers, cellular phones, digital watches, etc) are not allowed and may have a negative effect on your final grade. Turn them off or put them on silent mode.

  5. Do not answer your phone in the classroom. Walk into the hallway
  6. \
  7. Chewing gum will be allowed as long as I can not hear you chewing it. Popping, rolling, cracking or any other obnoxious oral noises will not be tolerated
  8. \
  9. Sleeping in class is rude. For each occurrence, the student's grade will drop one letter and the student will be asked to leave the classroom
  10. \
  11. Reading the newspaper, working on assignments or studying for an exam for another class is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. For each occurance, the student's grade will drop one letter grade and the student will be asked to leave the classroom

  13. No student should come to class under-the-influence of alcohol or drugs. If the odor of these substances are smelt upon your person will be asked to leave the classroom

Grading Criteria

 LECTURE:

There will be 5 major Unit Exams totaling 500 points (100 points each). Quizzes (~15) will be worth a total of 300 points (~20 points each). Discussions, homework submissions, and participation will be worth extra points.  There is a total of 1000 points you can earn throughout the semester.

FINAL EXAM:
\
This exam will be comprehensive and given the last week of the semester. Worth 200 points

GRADING:

900-1000 = A 800-899 = B    700-799 = C    600-699 = D    599 and below = F

NO MAKE UP WILL BE GIVEN FOR MISSED MAJOR EXAMS, DISCUSSIONS, OR QUIZZES!

Unit exams and quizzes will end at 11:55 p.m. on the corresponding date due.

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.

Calendar

\ Expect exam questions to be from lecture material, assigned textbook readings, handouts, guest lecturer(s) , etc. Expect multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank and essay questions. THE FINAL EXAMINATION WILL BE COMPREHENSIVE. Do not ask the instructor any questions regarding the exam. When finished with an exam, submit the exam and answer sheet to the instructor and leave the classroom quietly. Excessive noise is disruptive to other classes in the immediate area. DO NOT leave the building unless you have been instructed to do so.
