Prerequisites

Course Description

Emphasis placed on identifying parts of speech in simple, compound and complex sentences. Grammar usage will be practiced through paragraph writing and proofreading.

Student Performance

\ Course Objectives:  To increase students’ ability to communicate clearly through the written and spoken word.  To further develop basic grammatical skills.  To increase students’ ability to use compound and complex sentences.

\ Student Performance Objectives:  1. Learn to use the four steps of grammar: prepositional phrases, nouns, verbs, and complements. 2. Master subject - verb agreement. 3. Use compound and complex sentences. 4. Learn to formulate paragraphs and simple compositions in order to present ideas clearly and concisely. 5. Learn to proofread and correct grammatical errors. 6. Increase grammatical skills and the ability to communicate.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Please speak English in the classroom at all times. Cell phones must be turned off during class times unless special permission is given by the instructor.

Grading Criteria

\ A = 90-100 Excellent; B = 80-89 Good; C = 70-79 Fair; D = Below 70 ; Failing, must repeat.
\ One hour of lab work per week is required.
\
\ Makeup Policy:
\ Make up tests will not be given. The lowest test grade will be dropped. If you miss one test,
\ that grade will be dropped and your other tests will be averaged with no penalty. If you miss
\ more than one test, you will receive a 0 for each additional test missed.
\
\ Dropping to Avoid a Failing Final Grade:
\ If a student does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will need to drop the
\ course by the last day to withdraw to receive a grade of W. A grade of W does not lower your
\ grade point avarage. However, students who drop or fail a class must repeat and pay for the
\ same class again to earn credit for the class. Dropping or failing a class could also cause
\ problems with financial aid.

\ Written Examinations                                  1/2 of final grade
\ In-class assignments and participation         1/4 of final grade
\ Final Examination                                       1/4 of final grade

Attendance

\ Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 hours a semester.  Additional absences will affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.
