Expected Student Behavior

Plagiarism, Cheating and Individual Work Ethic: The Amarillo College policies and Code of Student Conduct is strictly adhered to when dealing with plagiarism, cheating and duplication of work product. Any evidence of plagiarism, cheating or duplication of work product (whether from this semester’s students or a prior semester’s students) will result in a zero on the entire project or test in question.
Plagiarism is considered serious academic misconduct. “Plagiarism” shall be defined as the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another’s work and the unacknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one’s own written work. All assignments presented in this class must be the work of the student submitting the assignment. No form of scholastic dishonesty will be tolerated. Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion.
“Cheating on a test” shall include:

  • Copying from another student’s test paper.
  • Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test.
  • Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of an unadministered test.
  • The unauthorized transporting or removal, in whole or in part, of the contents of the unadministered test.
  • Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for one’s self, to take a test.
  • Bribing another person to obtain an unadministered test or information about an unadministered test.

“Collusion” shall be defined as the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work for fulfillment of course requirements.

Grading Criteria

Discussion Participation

There will be discussion questions posted online for each week (there are a few exceptions) for a specific chapter.  You will be awarded a maximum of 10 points for your participation during the week the chapter is assigned.  For example, during May 21 through May 27, 2012, Chapters 1 and 2 of the Law Office Management textbook are assigned.  If you participate in the discussion during this time period, you will be awarded 10 points.  There will be no points given for discussion occurring before the week the chapter is assigned or after the date for the chapter has passed. This is 5% of your final grade.

80-89                            = B
70-79                            = C (Minimum Grade Required for Paralegal Studies Majors)
60-69                            = D
Below 60                      = F

            Quizzes and Assignments          = 25%
            Semester Notebook                    = 30%
            Major Exams                              = 20%
            Final Exam                                  = 20%
            FINAL GRADE                          =100%                                   
 

Deadlines for Assignments, Quizzes, and Testing:

Students are required to adhere to the course schedule.  All deadlines are posted to the online course calendar and will be strictly adhered to.  No “make up” or “extra credit” opportunities will be allowed.  This policy applies to all course deadlines."   If an assignment or any portion of a project is turned in after the due date, but within one week, you will be eligible for maximum grade of 50.  If it is turned in after one week, you will not receive credit for the assignment or the portion of the project which is late. 

Changes/deviations from the course schedule will be made by e-mail at the earliest possible time.  CHECK YOUR E-MAIL DAILY, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT WORKING ON THE COURSE.  It is the student’s responsibility to stay current, informed, and on time regarding deadlines.

 All major exams and the final will be taken online.  You will only be able to submit your major exams and final exam one time.  No requests will be honored for a major exam or the final exam to be taken early.  No requests will be honored for a major exam or the final exam to be taken late. 

Online chapter quizzes must be completed before taking each major exam and the final exam.  If a student has not taken ALL of the online quizzes by the due date of the closing of the quiz, 20 points will be deducted from the major exam to which those quizzes pertain.  Students may take each online chapter quiz twice; the highest of the two grades will be recorded.  No quizzes may be taken after the due date.  Remember to consistently consult your online calendar. 

With regard to the Online Chapter Quizzes and Major Exams and the Final Exam, the instructions will tell you that you cannot skip a question and return to it! Please be aware of how the quizzes and major tests are given before you take the quiz and/or major test.

You are given two attempts on the chapter quizzes. You will only be given one attempt on the major exams and final exam!

Be prepared before you take quizzes and major exams.  Also, please be aware that discussion-type questions may occur anywhere in the exam.  You cannot skip to the discussion-type questions and return to the multiple choice questions.  Manage your time wisely and be prepared for exams!!!
