Course Description

Study of word origin and structure through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties and diagnostic procedures. To include definitions, spelling and pronunciation of medical terms.

\ The Language of Medicine, 9th Edition, Davie-Ellen Chabner, W. B. Saunders This course requires an access code. This is packaged with the book and can be purchased at the Amarillo College West Campus Bookstore.

Expected Student Behavior

\ It is the responsibility of the student to access the course on a regular basis, participate and complete required assignments, quizzes and exams.

\ POLICY FOR STUDENTS REQUIRING THEA REMEDIATION:

\

\ Students that have been identified for THEA-required remediation must, according to Texas State Law, participate continuously in their THEA-remediation courses or they will be withdrawn for ALL course work, including the AH courses, through an administrative withdrawal for THEA non-compliance. If you have any questions about THEA-remediation, please call the Advising and Counseling Center at 371-544.

\ WITHDRAWING FROM A COURSE:

\

\ It is the responsibility of the student to officially drop or withdraw from a course. Failure to officially withdraw may result in the student receiving a grade of "F" in the course. The student may obtain a withdrawal form from his academic advisor, the counseling center or from the registrar's office. It is also the responsibility of the student to take the drop slip to the registrar's office in order for the student to be officially dropped from a course.

\ Students are not automatically dropped from their class roles as a result on non-attendance.

\

\ STUDENT GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:

\ A student who has a problem with the course or the course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor. If that is not successful, the student may appeal the decision of the instructor to the Program Director, Dean of Health Sciences, Vice President of Academic Affairs, Amarillo College President -- IN THAT ORDER.   Please refer to the Online Amarillo College catalog for complete explanation of the grievance procedures.

\ ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

\ Academic dishonesty shall constitute a violation of the college rules and regulations and is punishable as prescribed by Amarillo College board policies.  Academic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion.

\ "Cheating on a test" shall include:

    \ Copying from another student's test paper.

    \ Using test materials not authorized by the person administering the test.

    \ Collaborating with or seeking aid from another student during a test without permission from the test administrator/instructor.

    \ Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for one's self, to take a test.

\ 'Plagiarism" shall be defined as the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another's work and the unacknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one's own written work.

\ "Collusion" shall be defined as the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work for fulfillment of course requirements.

Grading Criteria

\ QUIZZES:

\

\ Quizzes will be given over each chapter in the textbook material and computer modules.
\ There will be 15 quizzes during this course.
\ The student will need to review the calendar for quiz dates.
\ The student will have a 48 hour window to take a quiz.
\ Time limit for quizzes 1 - 14 is 50  MINUTES
\ Time Limit for quiz #15 will be 80 minutes. 
\
\ After each question is answered the student must select the "Next" button to save the answer.
\ At the end of the quiz the student must select the submit button on the quiz for it to be graded.
\ The student will be able to see the quiz grade after the quiz has been submitted.
\ Each quiz has 100 possible points.
\
\ Any student who misses a quiz will receive a grade of zero (0) for the missed quiz. 

\

\ Each quiz will OPEN @ 6:00pm and will CLOSE @ 6:00pm. 
\ Quizzes will not be opened early or late.

\ IF A QUIZ IS MISSED, THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP QUIZZES.

  • \ The quizzes will be worth 15% of your FINAL GRADE.

\ MAJOR EXAMS:

\

\ There will be 7 major exams.
\ It is the student's responsibility to review the course calendar to see when the exam is scheduled.
\ Each exam is worth 100 possible points.
\ The student will have 60 to 75 minutes to complete an exam.
\ The student will have a 77 hour window or 3 day window to take their exams.
\ Once an exam is started the clock is running and cannot be paused.

\

\ Time limit for Exams 1 & 2 is 60 minutes. 
\ Time limit
for Exams 3 - 7 is 75 minutes
\
\ After each question is answered the student must select the "Next" button to save the answer.
\ At the end of the exam the student must select the submit button on the exam for it to be graded.
\ The student will be able to see their exam score after the exam has been submitted.

\ The student will have a COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM, WHICH IS WORTH 25% OF YOUR FINAL GRADE.

\ The Final Exam will be 200 questions.
\ The student will have 2-1/2 hours OR 150 minutes to complete the Final Exam.

\

\ Please refer to the course calendar for the Final Exam date.
\ Remember to select the submit button on each question answered. After each question is answered the student must select the "Next" button to save the answer. At the end of the final exam the student must select the submit button on the final exam for it to be graded. Please remember once the final exam is started the clock is running and cannot be paused.

\

\ If the STUDENT misses the designated time for the FINAL EXAM, a grade of zero (0) will be given for the exam, unless an incomplete has been granted. Arrangements to receive an incomplete "I" grade for the course must be made prior to the date of the final exam and appropriate documentation given to the instructor.

\

\ Incompletes are granted only for emergency situations such as hospitalization of the student, serious injury to the student on the day of the final exam, etc. Incompletes will not be granted for situations involving vacation plans, appointments, or computer problems, etc.

Attendance

\ Regular attention to the course calendar is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Because this is an online course, it is the responsibility of the student to log into the course in AC Online on a regular basis.
