\ 10% - Multiple quizzes
\\ 50% - Four themes (critical analyses)
\\ 10% - Three response papers
\\ 20% - Two exams (objective and essay)
\\ 10% - Final exam
\\ Group work (Extra Quiz Grades)
\\ Three debates (Extra Quiz Grades)
\\ 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, Below 60=F
\\ The quizzes, each worth 100 points, are tests on assigned reading before discussion. I will drop the lowest quiz grade at the end of the semester and average the remaining grades (equal in value to an exam or paper). You may use notes you prepare on all quizzes. The first paper will be an original character analysis; the second paper will be an analysis of theme (researched); this paper will count twice. The third paper will be an analysis of a poem not discussed in class. The exams will require identification questions and short answer essays. The winning team members of each of the three debates will receive an extra quiz grade of 100. The final exam will cover all areas but will count no more than a regular exam.
\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.
\\ If during the semester you consider dropping, please check with me first for an alternate plan that protects your investment in the course and gives you an opportunity to complete it. Remember that the deadline for drops this semester is April 20, 2011.
\\ INSTRUCTOR POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
\\ Late work: Everyone is allowed one late paper (no more than one week late). A second late paper will not be accepted.
\\ Make-up: No make-up on quizzes. The only exception to this policy is if you contact me before the next class meeting and request that I put a copy of the quiz in my box in Ordway 103. No make-up on exams, unless I hear from you before I grade them and pass them back in class.
\\ Attendance: Be here; be here on time. If you must miss a class, call me during my regular office hours or email me. I will return your call or email you ASAP. DO NOT GET BEHIND IN THE READING ASSIGNMENTS.
\\ DISCUSSION AND PARTICIPATION:
\\ This class is designed for your involvement; you learn more if you are active. I encourage you to participate in class discussion; I require your participation in group activities. You need to take careful notes over all material after it is assigned and before discussion (mainly for quizzes) and over all class discussions (for exams). If I write something on the board, you will probably need it for the next exam, so write it in your notes. You might highlight or underline this information for clarity in preparing for exams. I don=t care how you take notes or in what form (spiral, loose leaf, etc.), but you definitely need to keep all handouts from class for exams and papers.
\\ TWICE DURING THE SEMESTER I WILL TAKE UP YOUR NOTES AND EVALUATE THEM (QUIZ GRADE) FOR COMPLETENESS AND ORGANIZATION.
\\ FYI: Generally speaking, the only way you can fail this class is to be irresponsible.
