Prerequisites

Course Description

Development of expressive and receptive skills in fingerspelling and numbers. Receptive skills focus on whole word phrase recognition and fingerspelling/number comprehension in context. Expressive skills focus on the development of speech clarity and fluency.

Student Performance

\ Learning Outcome 1:  The student will demonstrate an understanding of fingerspelling theories and concepts with a minimum of 70% accuracy.

  1. \ The student will identify the different uses of fingerspelling.

  3. \ The student will demonstrate performing warm-up exercises to relax muscles and prevent stress to the hands, wrists and arms.
  4. \
  5. \ The student will demonstrate the understanding for reading syllables and words rather than individual letters.
  6. \
  7. \ The student will demonstrate an understanding of the ability to broaden their focus, centering on the lower face, utilizing peripheral vision to allow for input from non-manual markers, speech-reading techniques, and speaker affect as well as from the fingerspelling.
  8. \
  9. \ The student will demonstrate the ability to concentrate on the context in which the fingerspelled word is contained as reinforcement to reading fingerspelling.
  10. \
  11. \ The student will demonstrate an understanding of incorporating contextual clues to aid in closure when letters or words are missed or not clearly fingerspelled.

  13. \ The student will demonstrate knowledge of the principles of lexicalized fingerspelling.  The student ill demonstrate an appropriate understanding of terminology associated with fingerspelling.

  3. \ The student will demonstrate the ability to simultaneously, without voice, mouth fingerspelled words.

  5. \ The student will demonstrate the ability to correctly form each letter of the alphabet.
  6. \
  7. \ The student will demonstrate the ability to move from one letter to the next in a rhythmic fashion without extraneous movements.
  8. \
  9. \ The student will demonstrate the appropriate phrasing in fingerspelling.

  11. \ The student will demonstrate the ability to correctly execute commonly used lexicalized fingerspelled vocabulary.
