Expected Student Behavior

  • If you were not here to hear a lecture, then it is up to you to get the notes and assignments from other students.
  • If you were not here for an assignment, then you get a 0 for that assignment unless you make arrangements for another student to take notes for you, and let you know about it.
  • If you do have to be absent, it is only common courtesy to let the instuctor know about it, ahead of time if possible.  If you have this syllabus, you have my email, office phone, and department phone, it's just not that hard to let me know about an absence!
  • While being late to class sometimes happens to the best of us, if being late becomes consistent, it may be necessary to count each day late as one absence. The student will be notified if this occurs.
  •  It is necessary for each student to take good notes during lectures, and to read the chapters in the text book. Some lectures contain material that is not in the text, and some text material may not be covered in lecture.
  • No administrative withdrawals will be initiated by the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw before the deadline.

Grading Criteria

10% - (Each) 2 mini papers

10% (Each) 3 Exams

25% -  Attendance & Participation

25% - Semester project

Any papers turned in late will be deducted 1 letter grade per class day that it is late.
If you miss an exam, you must inform me before the next class day and make arrangements to take the test. If I am not contacted before the next class day, the test may not be re-taken.

Attendance

This course requires participation and attendance since many activities cannot be duplicated.  Additionally, much of what we learn about interpersonal communication is gained through the activities and group work in class with your fellow classmates.  Excuses are not necessary for absences, and will not excuse an absence, however, it is common courtesy to let your instructor know if you are not going to be attending a certain class. The following criteria will determine the grade for attendance:

 No more than 2 absences - 100

 3 absences- 80

 4 absences - 70

 5 absences- 60

 6 absences- 50

 7 absences- 40

 8 absences -30

9 absences - 20

10 absences - 10

11 absences  (I'm not saying that you should drop the class, but you will not be able to pass at this point)

(Night classes:  1 night absent = 2 absences)
