Course Description:

Advanced principles of oral and written communications for managers.

 

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. The student will identify and explain the procedures for writing various types of organizational documents including organizational manuals, proposals and formal reports, and the elements involved in international and intercultural communications as related to those documents.
  2. Identify the process of oral reporting in organizations and how audience analysis is integrated into the choice of communication channels, and the perceptions of various audiences within the organization. Compare and contrast group communications with one on one communications.
  3. Students will demonstrate the ability to identify and analyze research for formal reports.
  4. Compose formal and informal reports for various organizational purposes, integrating the concept of goodwill as it applies to communication skills.
  5. Describe the characteristics of and patterns for positive, negative and persuasive messages in written and oral messages.

Grading Criteria

GRADING SCALE:

  90-100%          A Excellent

  80-90%            B Above Average, Very Good

  70-80%            C Average, Good

  60-70%            D Poor, but passing

  Below 60%      F Failing

EXAMINATIONSExaminations will consist of essay, true-false, multiple choice, matching or short answer questions.

Final Examination will be comprehensive.

Final grade will be determined by dividing total number of points by the number of tests and projects.

Instructor reserves the right to subjectively influence the final grade relative to class attendance, participation and attitude.

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

I understand that it is sometimes impossible to come to class (Swine Flu, death or dismemberment). Because so much of the content of this course occurs in class, students are expected to attend all regularly scheduled class meetings. Should you miss a class, it is your responsibility to determine what you have missed and take appropriate actions. Please obtain the names and phone numbers of at least two of your fellow classmates and contact them to find out what you missed. Students who have perfect attendance and at least an 80 average will not be required to take the final.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:  It is the responsibility of the student to initiate drop or withdrawal procedures through the Registrar’s Office.  Students who stop attending class but do not officially drop or withdraw from this course will receive a letter grade at the end of the semester.

November 20th is the last date to withdraw.
