INMT-1375-002 Maintenance Shop Practices

Course Description

An introductory course that assists the student in understanding the shop practices in industry. The student begins by using basic machine tools such as the lathe, milling machine, drill press, power saw, bench grinder and hand tools. Machine terminology, theory, math, part layout and bench work using common measuring tools is included. Emphasis is placed on shop safety, housekeeping and preventative maintenance.

Expected Student Behavior

Textbook,Workbook,Notebook & Class Equipment

Students are required to have the specified textbook and workbook no later than the third class session. Failure to do this will result in the student receiving a five point reduction for the fourth class period and increases by five points each following day.The student is required to take notes during lectures, and to turn in a notebook. These notes need to be on three ring bound note book paper. Student shall furnish a SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR( NO CELL PHONE CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED) and personal protective equipment which includes ANSI Z87.1 approved safety glasses. Student shall have their own personal hand tools similar to those on the department service tool list. Student shall furnish necessary computer media for information transfer. Student shall furnish required text and Handyman Pocket Handbook.

Safety Policy and PPE

Safety is everyone's job,and it starts before you enter the shop area. A machine shop has rotating machinery,high voltage electrical equipment,hot metal,sharp metal and chemicals,all of which can harm or even kill you. That is why the rules described below are needed.

Rule#1. Only Safety glasses' with side shields, that meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1 spec will be allowed.

Rule#2. Only long pants are allowed.

Rule#3. Only short sleeved close fitting Tee-shirts or long sleeved shirts rolled up past the elbow are allowed

Rule#4. No open toed shoes are allowed,students will wear required work boots or work shoes.

Rule#5. Hair over shoulder length needs to be secured safely with a hat, cap or hairnet.

Rule#6. No necklaces, bracelets, dangling earrings, rings or watches are to be worn in shop.

Rule#7. No horseplay of any type will be tolerated.

Rule#8. Any vandalism or theft will not be tolerated.

Rule#9. Any student under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Rule#10.No food or drink in shop.

Failure to comply with rules #1-#6 & 10, will result in the following disciplinary actions.

First offense. The student will receive a verbal reprimand from instructor and, be withdrawn from the class for that period receiving no grade for that day.

Second offense. The student will receive a written reprimand from instructor, removed from the class for two class periods reviving no points for either day. Any quizzes or test that occur during those classes cannot be made up and will counted as zero points.

Third offense. The student will be suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receive a FAILING grade for that class.

Failure to comply with rules #7-#9 will result in the student being immediately suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receiving a FAILING grade for that class.

Tools, Equipment,

Tools and equipment specified for this class and any recommended preliminary class in the Machining Technology/ Industrial Maintenance Curriculum are to be furnished by the student and be with the student during all lab activities. failure to have tools will result in the student receiving no lab grade for that class period. All student tools should marked with the students initials for easy identification, these tools should be properly used and cared for, thus allowing for longevity and safety of both the user and the tool.

Grading Criteria

Course Evaluations:

Students should complete all performance tasks on time at REQUIRED MASTERY LEVEL. Tasks, projects, and various assignments will be scored based on time; accuracy; neatness; completeness; procedure; skill; detail; motivation and attitude; safety practices; clean up; care of manuals, logbooks, and references; and other grading criteria. No task shall be rated until assignment is complete and correct. Complete shall include condition and cleanliness of equipment; clean up of work areas; tool condition and return of all supplies and materials to their proper location. Correct means that projects meets all print specifications in order to be graded.

Final (Overall) Grade Policy:

The final overall grade will be computed by adding the points earned as follows:

Shop Practice/Projects	20 max pts/session	15 sessions	300 possible
ToolingU/ Shop Test	Avg. of all work	15 sessions	395 possible
Final Exam	100 pts/ part	1 Exam/1project	200 possible

920 – 1000 pts = A

820 - 919 pts = B

720 - 819 pts = C

0 - 719 pts = F

Makeup Policy

Students are responsible for getting notes from other students when absent. Lab activities will continue on schedule. Individuals will not receive credit for making up activities and there will not be special lab sessions. Some work can be caught up during regular lab times. Missing lab activities may prevent individuals from completing lab projects.

Homework :TOOLING U/Quizzes, Projects and Final

TOOLING U/Homework will be from the TOOLING U Modules. Each module will end with a quiz. In order for the student to advance to the next module, he or she must succesfully pass the current subject (72% or above) being covered as well as succesfully completing the lab assignment 100% correct or the assignment will be repeated. The student is personally responsible for the pace of the work. All Tooling U modules must be completed by the last day of class, failure to do so will result in the student recieving a failing grade for the class.

Final: A comprehensive in class final exam and lab project will be required. The written exam will be open note only, and must be taken to pass the class. The final project must be turned in no later than the end of that students last class period to recieve a grade.

Attendance

The professional industrial worker understands the importance of being on time and having the required tools to do the job, that is why attendance in class and lab participation is regarded as a requirement and an obligation for learning. Students will be expected to be in the class and seated by the start of each class period.Attendance roll will be signed by the student at the beginning of the class. This roll sheet will be picked up by instructor five minutes after start of class, students not signing will be recorded as tardy losing ten attendance points. The attendance sheet will again be placed out one-half hour after class has started, any student not replying will be recorded as absent and lose all points for that day.There are times that special circumstances arise but instructor needs to be made aware of these circumstances, the instructor will then decide if excuse warrants merit or not. Attendance will also means that until the end of class or instructor releases the class you are required to be there failure to be present during end of class roll will result in all points for that day being forfeited, again there will be times that special circumstances will be allowed but instructor needs to be informed and the the instructor will decide whether reason for leaving early is valid or not. Lab participation means, that student has all the required materials ( PPE,tools,handouts) and will stay engaged in the shop performance of required exercises, which includes the cleaning of shop area prior to dismissal of class, failure to comply with this is described in the below section describing student behavior.
