Formulate a dental hygiene care plan for the medically and/or dentally compromised patient; and describe advanced instrumentation techniques.
Instructor Objectives for the Course
Chapter objectives will coordinate with the materials presented in lecture, handouts, reading assignments, and exams. The student will know that these objectives have been successfully completed if he or she earns a final course grade of "C" or higher as evaluated by the instructor.
The standard for the objectives may be one or any combination of the following:
1. Differentiate between rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
2. Outline the critieria for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.
3. Outline the medical management for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
4. Understand the drugs used in the management of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
5. Outline the dental management of the patient with rheumatoid arthritis.
6. Recognize high risk patients with prosthetic joints.
7. Outline suggested antibiotic prophylaxis regimens for patients with prosthetic joints.
8. Recognize the oral complications and manifestations associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
9. Differentiate between Heberden's nodes and Bouchard's nodes.
10. Outline the dental management of the pateint with osteoarthritis.
11. Define systemic lupus erythematosus and name the etiology of the disease.
12. Outline the clinical presentation of an individual who has systemic lupus erythematosus.
13. Outline the dental management of a patient who presents with systemic lupus erythematosus.
14. Outline the oral manifestations associated with lupus erythematosus.
15. Define and name the etiology of Lyme disease.
16. Name a classic lesion of Lyme disease.

28. Define erythropoiesis.
29. Determine the relationship of the kidneys and the level of oxygenation.
30. Understand the phases of hemostasis for controlling bleeding.
31. Be familiar with blood coagulation factors.
32. Understand the dental management of the patient taking warfarin or coumadin.
33. Understand the signs, symptoms, etiology, oral complications and manifestations as well as the medical and dental management of patients who have these disorders: a) Leukocytosis, b) Leukopenia, c) Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, d) Acute Lymphoid Leukemia, e) Chronic Myeloid Leukemia f) Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, g) Hodgkin's Disease h) Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and I) Multiple Myeloma.
