\ Description of Course:

\

\ The major systems of the human body with special emphasis on circulation are presented; prosection in the program lab is included.

\

\ Method of Instruction:

\

\ Lecture and Lab. Human Anatomy, MRTS 2432, is invaluable to the student of embalming.  Instruction consists of lecture and laboratory.  Visual aids, models, and specimens augment and reinforce both lectute and lab.

\

\ Purpose and Goals of course:

\

\ By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all the listed learning objectives with a minimum 75% competency level based on the completion of a minimum of four major exams and a comprehensive post examination not to exceed two hours.  These exams will be administered under the supervision of the instructor.

\ Performance / Learning Objectives (Minimum Competencies):

\

\ After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:

\

\ 1. Identify the organs, structure, and features of the various body systems.

\

\ 2. Emply linear guides, anatomical landmarks, and anatomical limits in locating vessels used in embalming.

\

\ 3. Demonstrate ability to use preparation room and prosection augmentation.

\

\ 4. Relate the function and relationships of the systems of the human anatomy.

\

\ 5. Name regions and features of structure.

\

\ 6. Identify the bones of the human body, their articulations and their relationships to other systems and structures.

\

\ 7. Name the muscles of the face for restorative art purposes.

\

\ 8. Recognize muscles used for locating in the embalming process.

\

\ 9. Manipulate major arteries and veins used in embalming.

\

\ 10. Distinguish the location of visceral organs for effective cavity treatment.

\

\ 11. Recall anatomical terminology.

\

\ 12. Use anatomical terminology.

\ 1. To provide adequate knowledge to relate embalming, pathology, restorative art and other related subject areas.

\ 2. To foster healthful living habits through an understanding of the normal structure and function of human anatomical structures.

\ 4. To be able to facilitate communication with members of other allied health areas.

\ 5. To promote an appreciation of and an interest in teh human body as a subject for independent study and continuing intellectual growth.

Expected Student Behavior

FOOD/DRINK:It is the policy of the Mortuary Science Department that food and drink be allowed in the classroom setting, at the instructors discretion, but food and drink are not allowed in the lab.
PHONE/PAGERS:It is the policy of the Mortuary Science Department that cell phones and pagers must be turned off or in silent mode in the classrooms, the Computer Labs, and the Cadaver Lab.  ABSOLUTELY, NO CALL shall be taken during a quiz, exam or lab practical.  This will result in a grade of zero on that quiz, exam, or lab practical.

 

Grievance Procedure:

If the student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the studetn my proceed to the Mortuary Science Program Director,( Mr. Rankin), the Dean of Allied Health (Mr. Mark Rowh), the Associate Vice-President for Instruction, (Dr. Lowery-Hart), or the college President,( Dr. Matney), IN THAT ORDER.

SPECIAL NOTES:

This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.  Material inlcuded is intended to provide an outline of the course and rules that the instructor will adhere to in evaluating the student's progress.  Students are expected to read the textbook before and after the material is presented in lecture.

Grading Criteria

Grades will not be curved nor will points be added to any grade.
920  - 1000 = A
830 - 919 = B
750 - 829 = C
Below 750  = F

This grading scale is the policy of the Mortuary Science Program.

LECTURE:

One half (50%) of the total grade for the semester

1. Five major exams- consisting of multiple choice, matching, labeling diagrams, and true-false questions.  Each exam is worth 100 points.

2. Lecture quizzes (5-7) consisting of 10 - 20 questions.  Each quiz is worth 20 points.

3. One lecture exam and one lecture quiz grade will be dropped.

4. The lecture grade is worth a total of 500 points.

LABORATORY:

One -fourth (25%) of the total grade for the semester.

1. Two lab practicals consisting of 100 questions (fill in the blank ans short answer).  This will be divided into one individual assignment and one lab team assignment.  Each lab practical is worth 100 points.

2. Lab quizzes (5-7) consisting of 10 - 20 questions.  Each lab quiz is worth 10 poiints.

3. One lab quiz will be dropped.

4. The lab grade will be worth a total of 250 points.

FINAL EXAM

A comprehensive exam, consisting of multiple choice, matching, labeling diagrams and true - false questions.  This exam will be 150 - 200 questions.  The exam is designed to prepare the student for their board exams.  It will be worth 250 points.

 

 

Attendance

\ It is the responsibility of the student to attend both lecture and lab.  Attendance will be taken until the census day (September 12, 2012), after that date attendance will not be taken.

Calendar

\ Lecture and Laboratory weekly schedule will be presented the first day of the class.
