WLDG-1372-001 Layout and Fabrication I

Course Description

An introduction to layout as it is applied to development of patterns and drawings for the fabrication of sheet metal and structural shapes. Calculations involve joint/bend allowance and metal forming. Projects develop skills in print interpretation and the use of shears, breaks and hand tools.

\ Notebook & Class Equipment
\
\ Students are required to take notes during lectures and should maintain a class notebook. Notebook should contain handouts, reference material, formula sheets, test, assignments, and task list. Student shall furnish a scientific calculator and personal protective equipment to include safety glasses. Student shall have their own personal hand tools similar to those on the department service tool list. Student shall furnish necessary computer media for information transfer. Student shall furnish required text and Handyman Pocket Handbook.

\ Shop Policy
\
\ Read safety handouts provided, use common sense, maintain safe shop practices, keep your Lab clean, and orderly. Keep all safety shields/guards, and equipment in place at all times. Notify your Instructor of faulty wiring/equipment, worn or damaged tools, or missing parts. No horseplay is allowed whatsoever. Academic disciplinary measures will be promptly administered to offending person(s). Please help the Instructor to maintain order so that he can be free to use your time for more effective teaching, and less time housekeeping. We all can enjoy the benefits of an effective and conducive learning environment. Remember to use your safety glasses when entering the shop area. Always perform proper Lock-out / Tag-out.

\ Tools, Equipment, and Clothing
\
\ Students shall wear appropriate clothing to perform any work task assigned. Tools and equipment specified for this class and any preliminary class in the curriculum are to be furnished by the student. Failure to dress for work or bring needed equipment may count as an absence. All tools should be properly used and cared for, thus allowing for longevity and safety of both the user and the tool.

Assigned written material from the textbook appropriate to each day's classroom and shop projects is to be completed prior to class time.  Tests 2 and 3 will be over the assigned material.

Attendance

\ Attendance and participation in class and lab is regarded as a requirement and an obligation for learning practice oriented disciplines. Students are responsible for participating in an attendance record management system as designated by the instructor. Attendance / participation grade points may also reflect homework; class preparation; punctuality; housekeeping; proper dress; and required equipment, supplies, and text.

Class 6: Mitered fittings;  Wyes and crosses; 90 degree and odd angles

Class 7: Saddle fittings; concentric, 90 degree and odd angles

Class 8: Continue with Saddle fittings; TEST 2

Class 9: Saddle fittings; eccentric, 90 degree and odd angles

Class 10: Continue with Saddle fittings

Class 11: Concentric and eccentric reducers

Class 12: Orange Peel and blunt head caps

Class 13: Orange peel and blunt head caps; TEST 3

Class 14: Vent hoods and railing intersections

Class 15: Square to round fittings and review for final
