BIOL-2421-001 Microbiology for Science Majors

Prerequisites

RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills; SCIT 1307 recommended

Course Description

Principles of microbiology, including metabolism, structure, function, genetics and phylogeny of microbes. The course will also examine the interactions of microbes with each other, hosts and the environment. Laboratory activities will reinforce lecture content.

Student Performance

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the listed learning objectives (below) with a minimum of 60 percent competency level based on the completion of the required examinations and other work as required by the instructor.

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:

\

1. Describe the major subdivisions of microbiology and describe the types of microorganisms involved in each division.

\

2. Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells on the basis of size, organelles, chromosomal characteristic, reproductive characteristics, and nutritional type.

\

3. Describe and give the function and basic chemical composition of various cellular organelles.

\

4. Describe and give examples of the four nutritional types.

\

5. List the major characteristics of each kingdom of the biological world and viruses.

\

6. List and describe the various characteristics associated with life.

\

7. List and describe the major beneficial and destructive activities of the microbial members of each kingdom of the biological world.

\

8.Describe and compare the various chemical and physical methods used in microbial control.

\

9. Describe the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatments of major microbial diseases.

\

10. Give and describe the body’s lines of defense in resisting and/or combating disease causing microorganisms.

\

11. Explain what is meant by nosocomial infections and how to prevent nosocomial infections in patients.

\

12. Explain how to safeguard themselves and others from infectious disease.

Expected Student Behavior

AVOIDANY APPEARANCE OF CHEATING:The appearance of cheating may result in a grade of zero for the exam or quiz. Hats and earphones arenot to be worn during exams.

\

CELL PHONES & PAGERS:  Cell phones and pagers should be turned OFF during lectures & especially during exams.  If you have an urgent need to have a phone or pager on, you must inform the instructor before class, put the phone on silent mode and must quietly exit the room to take a call. You may return when the call is completed.

\

BEVERAGES AND FOOD: may be consumed in lecture, but not in the laboratory.

\

LABORATORY: ABSOLUTELY  NO FOOD or DRINKS are to be taken into or consumed in the LABORATORY (a table outside Biol 201 is provided for containers).  Open-toed shoes and shorts or short skirts are not to be worn in the laboratory. Other safety rules are found in the front of Laboratory Manual and will be covered in the first lab class. These policies are for your personal safety.  The first violation of the safety rules will result in a warning, the second violation will result in dismissal from that class session.  Upon the third violation the student may no longer be allowed to attend class.  Students must also read and sign a laboratory safety contract (see next page) before they are allowed to continue attending.  MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) sheets are located in Biology 204A on the yellow storage cabinet. Seating may be assigned in laboratory (seating assignment is negotiable for reasonable issues).

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:  If a student has a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Department of Biological Science Chairperson, the Division of Sciences and Engineering Chairperson, the Dean of Instruction, and the college President, IN THAT ORDER.

Grading Criteria

Lecture exams:  Six  plus Comprehensive Exam.  Students mqy driop the lowest exam except for final.

Lab quizes and practicals will equal 400 points including a comprehensive lab final.

6 lecture exams = 600 points

Lab work =              400

lab final =                200

total.......................1200 points

 

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  It is therefore the responsibility of the student to attend class. If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course, you will receive an “F” for the course. A grade of “W” will be given for student-initiated drops or withdrawals on or before 4/17/08. Texas law now mandates that students may only drop or withdraw 6 times in their entire college careers, excluding drops prior to the census date.
