Course Description

In-depth study and applications of trigonometry including definitions, identities, inverse functions, solutions of equations, graphing and solving triangles. Additional topics such as vectors, polar coordinates and parametric equations may be included.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. This includes, but is not limited to the following: texting, making offensive remarks, reading newspapers, sleeping, asking questions not relevant to class material, working on projects or assignments (even if they are related to this class), or engaging in any other form of distraction. Troublesome behavior will NOT be tolerated. For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook http://sites.actx.edu/catalog/notices/. In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered. Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or AC’s Student Rights & Responsibilities will be subject to disciplinary action which may include, but is not limited to: removal from the classroom, consultation with the Math & Engineering Department Chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or Amarillo College.

\ Cheating includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper, using unauthorized sources of information, on any assignment, turning in work that is not your own (copied from the solution manual, having someone else do your work, etc.), and allowing someone to copy from your paper. Any student who cheats will receive a grade of zero for that assignment and that grade may NOT be dropped or replaced.

Grading Criteria

Homework:  Expect to have homework every day in this course! At the end of the semester, I will drop your four lowest homework assignments.

Daily Homework:  Daily homework assignments will consist of online assignments as well as written assignments. Online assignments will be submitted using MyMathLab and will be automatically graded on the website. Written assignments will be submitted in class. Details on how to register and enroll in MyMathLab will be given in class. Detailed instructions on format for written assignments is outlined in the syllabus. Assignment deadlines will be announced as material is covered.

I do not accept late homework, and I do not give extra credit!!!

  1. All homework will be turned in at the beginning of the class day following the assignment.  It is in your best interest to keep up with the work on a daily basis! 
  2. Written homework must be written in pencil on white 8.5 x 11 inch paper.  It must be neat and legible. I will be the judge as to what is neat. Just because you can read it doesn’t mean that I can interpret it.
  3. Do not tear your paper out of a spiral and leave jagged edges. Any assignment with jagged edges will not be accepted and be recorded with a grade of zero.
  4. Homework should be folded with your name, date, chapter section and class section on the outside page.
  5. Homework must be presented in an orderly manner with the problem running in a single column down the page.
  6. All final answers must be circled to receive credit. Any algebraic answer not circled or “boxed” in will not be graded.  Pictures/graphs do not need to be circled or boxed.
  7. If you have an assignment where you have to graph something, the ENTIRE ASSIGNEMENT must be on graph paper.
  8. Your grade for the homework will be a comletion grade.  That means that EVERY problem must have an answer that is circled in order to get full credit for the assignment. 

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given at the discretion of the instructor and will count the same as homework grades.

Exams:  Exams must be taken in pencil and will be taken in class.  At the end of the semester, I will replace your ONE lowest exam grade with the final grade, provided the grade on the final is higher than an exam grade.  If you miss an exam, it will count as your replacement exam and will not be made up.  The final exam score may not be dropped.  If you have two zero’s, the final will replace only one of these zero’s.

Final:  Under NO circumstances will the final be given at any other time (i.e. No Make Ups)!! The final will cover all material covered in-class including chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8. The comprehensive final will be given on the following date (as directed by the official Amarillo College Schedule): Monday December 9, 2013 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm.

Make-up:  Late work is NOT accepted! If you know that you are going to miss a test, you MUST make arrangements to take the test early.

The final average will be computed based on the following percentage basis: 
Homework/Quizzes….....20%   
Exams………... 60%   (A minimum of 3 exams will be given)
Final Exam.…... 20%  

 

 

 

 

Attendance

\ Regular attendance is necessary for clear understanding of the material in this course.  If an absence occurs, THE STUDENT is responsible for obtaining the information that was covered in class and any assignments that were given. Please remember the deadline for dropping any class at AC is November 20, 2013. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and/or poor grades and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.
