Prerequisites

Prerequisites: MATH 0302-minimum grade of C, Accuplacer score of 63, THEA score of 230 or an equivalent score on a state-approved test; RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills

Course Description

A survey course including topics in measurements, density, solutions, basic organic molecules and functional groups, reactions, carbohydrates and proteins.

Supplies

\ All students are required to purchase safety goggles, NOT safety glasses, and a plastic apron.  A non graphing calculator may also be used in this class.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Cheating is not allowed.  If you are found to be cheating, the paper will be taken up, given a zero, and that grade cannot be made up or counted as your drop grade.  See the Student Rights and Responsibilities document on the AC website. It can be accessed through the Students tab.

\ In the laboratory, goggles and aprons are required at all times.  No shorts, sandals, flip-flops, or other open type shoes are allowed.  Your feet must be covered in closed shoes at all times.  If you wear a skirt, it must fall below your knees. Hats of any type are not allowed in the laboratory. No food, beverages, or gum are allowed in the labs at any time.  These rules are for your safety as you learn to work in the laboratory.  If you forget to dress appropriately for lab and you are not able to change clothes in time to start the experiment with the group, you will not be allowed to do the lab.

Grading Criteria

There will be a comprehensive exam in this laboratory class, given on the last regular class day. Quizzes will be given following each laboratory experiment. The grade in this class will be determined from lab reports - 75%, post lab quizzes - 10%, and comprehensive exam - 15%. One lab grade may be dropped before final grades are calculated. The laboratory average will be 25% of the final grade in the class (1406-001).

There are no make up labs.  If a lab is missed, a zero will be recorded for that lab grade.  The lowest lab grade is dropped.

 

Attendance

: Regular attendance is the responsibility of the student. It has been shown that students with regular attendance have a higher success rate (read that PASSING) than those who do not come to class. If a student finds it necessary to drop this class, it is his/her responsibility to complete and submit the proper paperwork. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL THE INSTRUCTOR BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DROPPING A STUDENT FROM THIS CLASS! The last day to drop this class with a W is November 20, 2013. If you fail to drop this class, you will receive a grade of F.
