MATH-2413-005 Calculus I

Prerequisites

MATH 2412 or MATH 1348-minimum grade of C; or MATH 1314 and MATH 1316-minimum grade of C; or Department Chair consent

Course Description

Limits and continuity; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; definition of the derivative of a function and techniques of differentiation; applications of the derivative to maximizing or minimizing a function; the chain rule, mean value theorem and rate of change problems; curve sketching; definite and indefinite integration of algebraic, trigonometric and transcendental functions, with an application to calculation of areas.

    • All demonstrations in class will be done on a TI-84 Plus. If you already own another graphing utility, check with me to see if it is appropriate for this course.  You will not be able to use a TI-89

      Student Performance

      After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following topics as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:
      1. Develop solutions for tangent and area problems using the concepts of limits, derivatives, and integrals.
      2. Draw graphs of algebraic and transcendental functions considering limits, continuity, and differentiability at a point.
      3. Determine whether a function is continuous and/or differentiable at a point using limits.
      4. Use differentiation rules to differentiate algebraic and transcendental functions.
      5. Identify appropriate calculus concepts and techniques to provide mathematical models of real-world situations and determine solutions to applied problems.
      6. Evaluate definite integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
      7. Articulate the relationship between derivatives and integrals using the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

      \ SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY:  Scholastic dishonesty (cheating) of any kind will not be tolerated in this course.  Cheating is defined in Webster’s College Dictionary as “taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers.”  Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student’s paper and using unauthorized sources of information while taking a test.  Participating in scholastic dishonesty will result in a non replaceable grade of zero on the assignment or exam involved.  Thus, if you are caught cheating on an exam, a grade of zero will be assigned with no chance of the final exam replacing that grade.  Further action at a higher level may be sought if necessary.  Scholastic dishonesty is clearly defined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities.  If you are caught with a cell phone out during an exam for ANY reason, you will receive an F for the course.

      \ BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS/CLASSROOM GROUND RULES: Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment.  Behaviors that are not supportive include but are not limited to:  tardiness/leaving early, electronic device noises, talking during lecture, abusive, offensive, or disrespectful language and/or demeanor toward AC faculty, staff, students and/or property.

      \ In order to receive credit for a course, all material listed on the syllabus must be covered.  The state of Texas sets the requirements; therefore, this course will move at a pace to ensure that these requirements are met.  Complaining about the pace will not result in less material being covered.

      \ Students who fail to comply with the standards outlined in the syllabus and/or “Student Rights & Responsibilities” will be subject to disciplinary action which may include but is not limited to:  removal from the classroom, consultation with department chair and/or other AC authority, withdrawal from the course and/or the college.

      1. \ BE ON TIME: Students need to be on time to every class meeting.  It is distracting and disrespectful to the class when you arrive late.  If you must be late, please take the seat nearest to the door.  If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be counted absent.

      3. \ BE PREPARED: Students need to have all homework completed and ready to discuss when class begins.

      5. \ NO DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR will be tolerated.  Disruptive behavior includes, but is not limited to the following:  cell phones (ringing or text messaging) and beepers, abusive language and/or behavior, talking while instructor is lecturing, sleeping, leaving class early, arriving late, and getting up during lecture to go to the trash can or restroom.

      7. \ SUBSTITUTE BEHAVIOR:  If a substitute should come in to teach the class, you are expected to be on your best behavior and treat him/her with the highest respect.    I would not send anyone in to teach who is not fully capable of doing so.

      Grading Criteria

      Intoduction Assignment: Your first homework assignment will be to send me an email.  The details of this assignment are posted under the Lessons tab on AC Online.  The due date for this assignment is Friday, August 30.

      Homework: Your homework grade will be based on two types of assignments, MyMathLab and a written homework, each worh 10% of your overall grade.  The daily assignments on MyMathLab will be done online and due before you come to class the next day.  The work for those problems will make up your written homework.  More information on the written homework is posted in the Course Information folder on AC Connect.  No late work will be accepted, so complete and turn in all assignments on time.

      MyMathLab:  The homework assignments will be due by 10:30am the next class day.  To access MyMathLab where your online homework is located, get online on your computer and go to www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com.  You will need our class’s Course ID which is wheeler10519 and your Student Access Code which is found in the red and white MyMathLab kit/folder which is bundled with your new textbook or you can purchase an access code online with a credit card during the registration process.

      To Register and Enroll in MyMathLab:

      1. Go to www.pearsonmylabandmastering.comand click the Register button in the Students Area.
      2. Follow the onscreen instructions to register and enroll.  Remember, if you received the My Math Lab kit with your textbook, you do not need to purchase access online.  Your student access code is included in the kit.  If you did not purchase the textbook with the kit included, you will need to purchase access online using a credit card.  If you are retaking this course with the SAME TEXTBOOK, you can reuse the access code you used last time.
      3. During the registration process, if you have not used MymathLab before you will choose a username and password.  Consider using the same username and password you use for your AC Online access and be sure to write it down so you don’t forget it.  You are now ready to enter our course and you will see the course “homepage.”
      4. The first time you get into our course, you will need to run the “Browser Check” found on that homepage to make sure you have what you need to view the content in your course on your computer.  Blue “checks” are good.  If you get any red “x’s”, just follow the onscreen instructions.  If you need help from the software publisher, their “help” number is 1-800-677-6337.
      5. On the homepage, please also notice the links to “Pearson tutor services” and “How to Enter Answers”, which is a video that helps you learn how to put fractions, square roots, etc. into this software.  Both links are very helpful.
      6. Now you are ready to access your online homework.  Inside the course, click “Do Homework” on the left side of the page, and begin!  Also note, you can view your homework grades under the button called “Gradebook.”

      Clicker Participation: Thoughout the lecture, questions will be posed and answered using the clickers.  After each lesson, I will take the percentage of the questions answered as a daily clicker grade.  This participation grade will count for 5% of your average.  If you are absent, you will receive a 0 for that day.

      Quizzes:  There will be daily quizzes over the previous class period’s MyMathLab assignment that must be completed in PENCIL.  I will drop ONE grade and the remaining will count as 15% of your overall grade.  Quizzes may NOT be made-up.  If you know ahead of time that you will be missing a quiz, we may agree on a time to take the quiz EARLY.

      Exams: There will be four in-class exams and each will be worth 10% of your overall grade.  These exams must be written in PENCIL. At the end of the semester, I will replace your ONE lowest exam grade with the final exam grade, provided the grade on the final is higher than an exam grade. Exams may NOT be made-up.  The final exam score may not be dropped.  If you know ahead of time that you will be missing an exam, we may agree on a time to take the exam EARLY.

      Final Examination: The comprehensive final will be given on Monday, December 9th and will count as 20% of your overall grade.

      Other Information:  I do not give extra credit.  The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered and the instructor sets the pace to meet these requirements. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.

      Attendance

      If an absence occurs, THE STUDENT is responsible for obtaining the information that was covered and any assignments that were given. Please remember the deadline for dropping a class at AC is November 20, 2013. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.

      Additional Information

      Food/Drink:  Food and drink are not allowed in the computer labs.

      Phone/Pagers: Cell phones and pagers must be turned off or in silent mode and OUT OF SIGHT while in the classrooms and the computer labs. 

      FREE HELP: If you feel yourself getting behind in class or having problems with certain concepts covered, get help immediately.  It is YOUR responsibility to get help outside of class.  The following are a few ways to get FREE help outside of class:

      1. Contact your instructor during office hours or make an appointment.
      2. Get free tutoring from the Outreach Center (Engineering Rm 104)
      3. Get free tutoring from Student Support Services (Rm 305 of library; 371-5420)
